Can you imagine if this truly takes off? If it's any good, we'll be buying them all, all over again.

    Same as it ever was...

I will believe it after I hear it! They said the same thing with quadraphonic records.

I suspect that the greatest advantage to this technology will be in production, not necessarily in performance. I don't really think they'll be able to significantly improve the actual sound performance of vinyl, it just may enable them to crank out records faster and in greater numbers. If it can somehow positively affect quality control, that would be a huge plus. But I wouldn't expect this to be "high definition" like 4K compared to SD.

If it takes care of non-fill, I'm in. It seems nearly every knew LP I buy is marred by this to some degree.

This has nothing whatsoever to do with the formulation of vinyl used in pressing, just the manufacturing of stampers

I love technology. But, digital involvement in analog? I have my doubts about this. And 50% cost reduction in stamper costs will not result in lower prices to consumers.

    From the article:
"Bands are also realizing greater revenues from vinyl: according to financial details surfacing last year, vinyl is actually producing more revenue than ad-supported streaming."

I only see bigger margins, rather than lower prices.

If this HD vinyl takes off maybe our beloved vinyl will drastically decrease in price. Possible if successful at first HD vinyl will go the route of the laserdisk.

I dunno 'bout that . . . if they'd live up to the "quality control" they claim, but do not deliver, that would go a long way . . .

Duly noted and I understand that. I made the assumption based on the quote stating that the "final end product would be vastly improved."

At the very least, if the costs to create LP's is actually reduced by this technology, that might give them an incentive to practice more diligent quality control.

That may be so but non-fill is not a problem this tech can solve

In my opinion, this is fanatastic news, if done properly. The best news is that it will be backwards compatible. Another victory for physical media and the LP.

We don't need HD Vinyl. How about improved pressing quality and more AAA titles?

Maybe the current prices of normal Def vinyl (ha) CAN come down then:)

Agreed, but I think that's perhaps the only thing that a more modern vinyl pressing technology can do. I rather doubt that it can actually make it any more "HD" than a well-mastered 45 RPM pressing.

Absolutely. That is exactly what I was thinking.

Bring it on! I’ve always felt that having 3 copies of every LP wasn’t quite enough. I’m in for more!

HD records will amount to nothing if the records are pressed at plants such as Rainbo.

What we need is not a better record, but a better record plant. (or 30)

Well, it'll have to be a totally different press (if I read the article correctly) so either it won't be at Rainbo, or it'll be a better rig than what they currently use.
