Probably not many people are aware of this, but DG quietly put out a high resolution remaster of Kubelik’s Mahler cycle not too long ago. It has the same artwork as my 1971 set and it features new transfers of the tapes. I do feel it’s better than the earlier CD transfer (there were two CD boxes, yours and an earlier one, with identical sound), with warmer and fuller sound. https://www.prostudiomasters.com/album/page/6250
Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau sings Mahler songs accompanied by Leonard Bernstein on piano (1968) // CBS UK pressing Speaking of Mahler: This is one of the few of Dieskau’s chamber recordings that I unconditionally enjoy. Usually I find his dynamics a bit too hysterical for my taste, but this live recording with Bernstein is a masterclass in subtle shading. Dieskau in an orchestral setting is another matter. Tomorrow we are doing a day trip from Manchester to the very fine Yorkshire town of Harrogate. A visit to the famous Betty's Tea Rooms is mandatory for tea and cake in refined surroundings. I'm also going to hit the antique shops and finally I've found a specialist record store that claims to have a good classical section - we shall see!
