For those in the US, uDiscover Music has it for a bit less than the exchange range from the UK, plus it comes with a 12"x12" print: Live At The Fillmore East 1968: Deluxe Edition + 12x12 Art Print
A real shame Pictures of Lilly wasn't recorded . We need a live document of it from the original band members.
I think I know what you mean -Dallas '67 and San Jose '68 show how 'explosive' the sound was vs. the sound (and guitar issues) for Lily that they got at Monterey. To have them play Lily at the Fillmore East gigs and not have a releaseable version of it is disappointing to me as it's a Who favorite of mine.
Agreed, and especially considering they played it both nights. I found the audience tape from the 6th, and gave it a listen. No idea why they considered "Pictures of Lily" unusable. Possibly some technical issues, as it sounds like a pretty good version (although the vocals are barely audible on the boot). I suppose the best sounding live Lily that is currently circulating aside from Monterey (which is somewhat messy, and Keith is without his snare) would be the July 23rd, 1967-show at the Memorial Auditorium in Dallas you mentioned. Many versions floating around of that one. It’s also available on the August 30th, 1967 (War Memorial Auditorium, Rochester) as well as the aforementioned February 21st, 1968 (Civic Auditorium, San José) recordings in rougher quality.
That's Pete's handwriting on the box, which makes it likely that the band reviewed the recording at some point with the live album in mind, and wanted to redo the vocals on several tracks, as well as some guitar ("Tattoo"). No idea what the percussion comment means. (Edit: Sorry, I see that @lp_zep already pointed this out.)
The only problem for me with how this set is shaping up is the missing Pictures of Lily. I am very disappointed about its absence. Shame on the engineer who screwed that up (yes I am making an assumption). Monterey is great, but I want to here those G/A power chords with Pete's real equipment, not some rented stuff. Monterey is fun, you get most of what the Who had to offer, but one of the best parts of the Who at that time was Pete venturing very far into the frontiers of distortion. Distorted power chords are what makes the world go 'round. Pictures of Lily! AAAGA! Riffin'
I finally gave up on buying from u Discover. Hit and miss when items ship even though they are an off shoot of the label. Crazy. I had ordered the Macca colored vinyl collection on day one. One item shipped two months later and the others eventually cancelled. Some here who ordered after me got theirs first. Horrible customer service. I’d stick w Amazon.
Come on guys....we already got plenty of definitive versions of "Pictures of Lily" from the 1989 tour.
I agree. It's better by nautical mile. Their cover is poor. It contains some pics inside I suppose, but that album cover must be better designed, especially due to vinyl LP version.
That is truly horrible, a desecration. And that's Pete's hair I am talking about. As for the music....
