Using the 20 minute sampler as a reference, I don't necessarily agree that the tapes weren't releasable as is. Yeah, the March 7h show in particular is problematic. However, I agree with Monk in that Botnick sucked the "breath of life" out of the recording. I don't think the trade-off was worth it.

I'm no mastering engineer, but to my untrained ears the unmixed music featured on the sampler tape is undoubtedly superior.

    =============================================

For comparison — here are all the tracks as recorded and in chronological sequence based on the photos of master tape boxes. This is what a complete box set would look like if one is ever published.

    MASTER TAPES:

    March 7, 1967 Tape # 1:

    1.) Backdoor Man
2.) My Eyes Have Seen You
    3.) Soul Kitchen
4.-5.) Jam* (Note: James Healey stated this "Jam" is two instrumentals totaling approximately 16 minutes, never before released. They don't even circulate on the bootlegs. It has not yet been revealed what these two songs are. Healey did not recognize them.)
6.) Get Out of My Life Woman
    7.) When The Music's Over
    8.) Close To You
    9.) Crawling King Snake
10.) I Can't See Your Face in My Mind
    11.) People Are Strange
    12.) Alabama Song
    13.) The Crystal Ship
    14.) Twentieth Century Fox
    15.) Moonlight Drive
    16.) Summer's Almost Gone

    21.) Light My Fire
    22.) The End

    March 10, 1967 Tape #3

23.) My Eyes Have Seen You
    24.) Soul Kitchen
25.) I Can't See Your Face In My Mind
    26.) People Are Strange
    27.) When The Music's Over
    28.) Money
    29.) Who Do You Love?
    30.) Moonlight Drive
    31.) Summer's Almost Gone
    32.) I'm A King Bee
    33.) Gloria
    34.) Break On Through
    35.) Summertime (instrumental)
    36.) Back Door Man
    37.) Alabama Song

    Fragment: March 9, 1967

38.) The End (survives as a fragment, as Peter Abram recorded the March 10 show over the March 9 show. Only a few minutes of The End survives from March 9, but includes some wild poetic imagery.)

Abram recorded 38 songs. Between the 2017 and 2018 LP RSD releases (and Break On Through on the 50th CD), 16 Matrix songs will have been issued from the master tapes. That leaves 22 remaining orphaned songs not yet released from the master tapes. Will Doors Inc, publish a complete CD box set soon? Or will they re-scramble the remaining 22 tracks and spread them out over future RSD releases or box set bonus tracks? Time will tell. But if there is any lesson here: Don't hold your breath.

Someone (vinylwagen) did a review of Doors releases since 2008 on YouTube (including Matrix and Isle of Wight). Pretty thorough examination of Isle of Wight. I wonder if vinylwagen isa member here?

For those that didn't notice, the 2008 release had disc one roughly alternated debut album tracks with cover tracks(plus one from WFTS). Disc 2 was centered around Strange Days with alternating covers.

Have any 3 Matrix consecutive tracks ever got a Doors sanctioned release?

Maybe there will be a 2019 RSD release with tuning and banter highlights.

^ That would be a fine cover for the full show release. With those reel pictures inside from monkboughtlunch.

My big fear is that the entire thing will be released (again) but the mix or sound quality won't be very good. The versions on the 50th boxes didn't inspire hope. I kinda wish I'd never heard those Abram samples!

  14. I love vinyl and enjoy last years Doors Matrix LP but in this case I'd rather have a CD box set just like the Velvet Underground's Matrix box. That was perfect.

He says something like that on the studio cut but the vocals are turned wayyyyy down. The "****" clause early on.

He did that at a lot of concerts for that song. He didn't even try at the isle of wight, since he was on trial for miami.

You can hear it slightly more on the studio mono version.

I hear ya. They’ll get it out.

On another note I was listening to ‘08 release again and even though the sound isn’t as good as the masters will be, I love these early renditions.

Absolutely, the music is great, nice to hear slightly unformed/work in progress versions of the tracks. Love Robby's guitar intro to LMF. The Matrix tapes truly are a treasure... it's like as if someone recorded the Beatles during their first hamburg trip... We are very lucky the tapes still exist

I'm really hoping a complete Matrix set is done similarly to the Velvet Underground's set that was released a few years back. It's great, great stuff.

Ya know, I thought maybe you were confusing this with another thing. I had NEVER noticed this. Like a beautiful absurd Easter Egg hidden there all this time! I definitely never noticed it on the studio version, muted or otherwise.

Jim, that guy was under-rated in the humor department.
