Mark Hollis' "The Colour Of Spring", from his self-titled album (1998).

(there is a brief moment where I can hear one note from a clarinet, I think, way down in the mix, so maybe it doesn't qualify, purely. but it's close-enough for me)

This song really meant a lot to me as it was released about 6 months after I lost my mom.
I remember needing to pull the car over the first time it came on.
Then Springsteen did this version on SNL and took it to some other level for me.

That is a magnificent cover, and I have watched it many times before. Spellbinding. But as usual with Tom Waits, nothing beats the original, which is also just piano and voice. He completely inhabits that song—“All broken down, by the side of the road, I was never more alive or alone. I’ve worn the faces off all the cards, I’m gonna take with me when I go.” Whew.

Agree one hundred percent. So evocative, without being maudlin. “How’s everything? Everything is everything, but your missing.” Brilliant songwriting. Captures the way random daily moments can make you experience loss over and again. Michael Gerson wrote a lovely tribute to his mother today in the Washington Post. Among other things, he says this: “A great loss is many losses, as the mind adjusts to living in a different universe.” Bruce does a great job of conveying that sentiment in this song. And this version is the best.

I was thinking of adding this performance to this thread, and you beat me to it. I remember seeing this on SNL and liking it so much more than the version on The Rising. Not sure if it's a trombone -or what, that is sliding up and down during the verses, but it makes The Rising version sound a bit cheesy to my ears.

I can't find a youtube video for it, but I love Bob Dylan's version of "When He Returns" from Slow Train Coming.

Fair play. I thought about posting the Waits version and agree with you how he "inhabits" the song. Nut I also love her version. Her voice is so......

Agreed, I can hardly listen to the Rising version when I know this version exists. I recorded it onto CD from a VHS (remember those?) so I could listen to it on my stereo. Not the greatest quality but it's better than not having it at all.

I agree--words fail. An amazing performance that is even more impressive when you consider the personal nature of the song she was covering. I don't think many others could pull that off. And I love the faces of the idle musicians when the camera pans their way. They are clearly mesmerized.
