I voted "Great actor, lives up to her reputation". Once we settle this question for good, maybe we can move on to the "Sergei Rachmaninoff as a Piano Player" poll.

Since you think it's a silly poll, why post?
Y'know, you really don't have to post in a thread you don't like.

    Thanks for the contributions.
I just wanted to know what people's opinions were.

I would have like to seen more about why people think she's a great actress.
Between the poll results and the posts here, it's unsurprisingly divided.
    I'm divided myself.
I guess this is why I wanted to know what everyone's opinions were.
Why she is a bad actress.
    Why she's a great actress...

    Anyway, thanks.

She is a great actress who has been in many not so great films. What makes a performance good or bad is a matter of personal taste I suppose. Most would agree that when the personality of an actor disappears and they convincingly become a different person, that is a good performance. She has done that successfully on more than one occasion and therefore deserves to be called good at her job.

I went with Great. I've written off Hollywood at this point, but we actually saw Florence Foster Jenkins at the theater when it came out and she cracked me up. She was also really good in The Iron Lady.

She'll kick the crap out of her male contemporaries at this point. Far more range than DeNiro, Pacino, or Nicholson who have all been on autopilot for years. And I don't think DeNiro was all that great to begin with.

My post reflects the degree to which I feel Streep's talent is unassailable. I'll stand by the analogy, but nobody is obliged to agree. :)

She must be pretty good because sometimes it’s hard to tell if she’s acting or not! :)

And I gotta say I liked Mama Mia.

I think she is a great actor who has some mediocre work out there. But I can't think of any great actors who do not.

Come on. Meryl Streep? How about dissecting Michael Jordan, Yo-Yo Ma, and Shakespeare? There was a reason superlative acting over the years became synonymous with her name, along the lines of: “He could be the next Babe Ruth.” Or “Who does she think she’s going to become in Hollywood? The next Meryl Streep?” Icon deservedly.

I can confirm that Streep is a better actor than at least two of them, but I never saw Shakespeare perform. ;)

Not a fan. Basically known these days for being Meryl Streep. Can't say I can think of any performance that I can remember off hand.

    To reiterate:

I know pretty much nothing about Meryl Streep. I've think I've seen only 3 of her movies.
All I really know about her is her reputation and the opinions of other people.

I'm not saying she's a bad actress or a great actress. I honestly don't know.
I only wanted to know what everyone else thought.
Is she a great actress? Why?
Is she a lousy actress? Why?

This is what I meant to say in the first post.
I'm just curious as to what others think.

I do appreciate a lot of the posts here.
    Thanks.

Here's a short collection of her scenes:

I think Meryl Streep is a great actor, one of the best, like Vanessa Redgrave. That doesn't mean I rush out to see any movie she appears in (Mamma Mia, for example).

But to argue that Meryl Streep is not a great actor is like arguing that Lennon & McCartney were not great song writers. Incomprehensible to anyone familiar with the craft.

Folks, there are only 4 options on the poll. Please keep your other inside thoughts (like the 37 that I just deleted) outside, thanks.

I like her. How about that? Do I like her in everything? No, but then wild horses couldn't drag me to see Mama Mia again. Do I think she's a great actress? Yup.
