I know someone who swears that "Smoke from a Distant Fire" by the one hit wonders The Sanford Townsend Band was by Van Morrison.

A DJ at a school dance once played Smokey Robinson's Tears of a Clown and announced it as being The Jackson 5. Seriously, he had the record right there in his hand, how could he get that wrong?
Don't You Forget About Me by Simple Minds was thought of by some people as a Billy Idol song back when it came out.
It's been mentioned earlier, but for years I thought Long Cool Woman in a Black Dress was CCR. I was surprised that I couldn't find it on their albums.

Well, Keith Forsey (Billy Idol's producer) wrote it for Billy, who turned it down.

To be honest, the arrangement of the song does sound like something Cat Stevens could've written.

I've seen "Send Me an Angel" credited to Pet Shop Boys (instead of Real Life) several times.

More than a handful of customers were looking for "that new song from Iggy Pop" when "A Girl Like You" from Edwyn Collins hit in '94.

I have seen both On the Dark Side by John Cafferty and Jessie's Girl by Rick Springfield credited to Bruce Springsteen.

A girl like you appeared on a couple of soundtracks, although not one shared with Iggy Pop as far as I know - or she must have got it confused with another song/artist

"Only Daddy That'll Walk the Line" - often thought of as a Waylon Jennings song, originally recorded by Jim Alley a year prior to Waylon. Written by none other than Jimmy Bryant, of Speedy West & Jimmy Bryant fame.
"I'm a Ramblin' Man" - again, often thought of as a Waylon Jennings song, but originally written and recorded by Ray Pennington.
"Cocaine Blues" - Almost always, I hear of this song referred to as a Johnny Cash song, because of his "Folsom Prison" album. Written by TJ "Red" Arnall, and first recorded with his vocals by the Western Aces. I think most people in Cash's generation, probably first heard it through Hank Thompson, on his "Songs for Rounders" album from 1959.
"Honky Tonk Man" - Often referred to as a Dwight Yoakam song, originally recorded by Johnny Horton in 1956.

Tom Waits' Jersey Girls is often mistaken for Springsteen. Springsteen has covered it live, but Waits' recorded version is soooo the Boss...it's uncanny.

I would also chime in about I can help by Billy Swan mistaken for Ringo Starr. It was a #1 hit, which came soon after Ringo scored 2 #1 of his own with Photograph and You're Sixteen, so it didn't hurt "I can help" if people thought it was being sung by Ringo.
