Me and my mate would listen to that on long car journeys. It was a essentially a game of chicken, who would crack first and switch the damn thing off.

I don't know if it was panned, but I love Randy Newman's Born Again. It's his trashiest album, loads of fun. The cover itself stands today.

I like Who By Numbers fine. But I've spent some time with Who Are You recently - I won't call it a dog, but I think the turmoil of its creation is really obvious when you listen to it, and only a small handful of tracks really transcend that.

i remember when it came out i like the songs, but didn't get how it was a concept album. the story was all over the place. i never knew about the re-sequencing. I picked up the cd one day and it made more sense. i reckon it's a very good album, it took a couple of listens because it was so different, but easily in the top 5 of all kiss albums.

I like Who By Numbers a lot but for me, FD & IH has a couple more tunes that puts the album ahead of those.

i'm not sure about critics, i don't pay them much mind, but fans of pink floyd seem to bash
the final cut (and i love it)
and fans of genesis seem to bash
genesis (1983) (and i thought it was a very good album)

It received mixed reviews from the critics, and also from the fans. Some of them hate it, some others love it (count me in the second group).

I love Lady Gaga's Joanne. I didn't think it was critically lambasted, but most reviews I just read didn't quite get it. Rolling Stone gave it 3 1/2 stars (which it gives to 75% or more of all reviews now), Pitchfork gave it 6.9, and the NYT called it confused and naïve. Maybe they can't taste the steak without the sizzle, but I sure can!

I mean, by that measure, all the now-classic Zeppelin albums are "critically lambasted" too. (Along with Pet Sounds.)

I think the OP meant albums that are poorly regarded by critics TODAY. So the original lineup Chicago records that got them into the R&RHOF? Don't really count.

Chicago 18 and 19, after Cetera left? THOSE count. (And God have mercy on your soul if you're a fan of either....)

Not sure if it was critically lambasted, but I don't think I've seen any glowing reviews for Dark at the End of the Tunnel by Oingo Boingo.

I was actually warned away from this one when I started digging into their discography in my teens - too dark and serious, I was told.

What you actually get here is a melancholy but beautiful pop album. It should be regarded as a classic based on the strength of the compositions alone.

If it's got a weak point, it's the choice to open the album with "When the Lights Go Out," which is more typical Boingo than anything that follows. It sticks out like a sore thumb against the rest of the album as a propulsive and aggressive number when the rest of the album is more subtle. Still not a bad song, just a rough match to the album.

Ah, this is a great record! Not sure it was really "lambasted" though. Just some general disappointment after a decade-long wait for new music.

This one too?? Apparently I've overlooked a crapton of "lambasting" PG reviews.

EDIT: Not seeing the negative reviews. 8/10 from UNCUT. A- from EW. 4 stars from Q and RS. 5 stars from Encyclopedia of Popular Music. Only true negative review is Village Voice, because Christgau is historically a miserable old fart.
