Bought two older offerings from HDtracks. Madonna’s True Blue and Like a Virgin.

True Blue is a nice improvement. Analog recording (I believe) and the 192/24 shows plenty of information above 44/16. It has deeper bass and it tames the loudness and brightness of the original Sire CD (good thing with all those aggressive synths).

Like a Virgin is…disastrous. It might be the most embarrassing Hi-Res release I have ever heard. The top end has nearly been eradicated from the last 4 tracks. Like True Blue it’s less bright alright, but also sounds so covered and low-fi that production details are lost! I have heard 128k mp3’s that sounded waaaay better than this. Stay…. away.

That's really bad. Since you said the problem was the last 4 tracks, which was side 2 of the LP, I wonder if they used a different master for those tracks. Of course, knowing who did any transfer or what they used or any details at all for most hi-rez releases is almost impossible.

The classic Steve Miller 24/96 offerings are really good IMO.

I dunno that I'd call it disastrous, but it lacks a certain punch the CD version has. Sorry for Your disappointment, but the heads-up is appreciated - and is exactly the type info we're all here for.

Brave New World is a pinnacle of the original Steve Miller Band sound, imo.

Haven't heard them, but according to the DR database, they look very compressed compared to other masterings.

Edsel's tend to be a bit more compressed..but in general they put out a nice product..I also liked the Pretenders and T.Rex
    sets.

Making buying decisions based on charts? Hmmm. The numbers really are not that bad anyway.

Just looked at the wavform..most tracks top out at -3.5 db...it looks great..and sounds great..reminds of a
SH DCC style remaster. Ears are best. :agree:

Just wanted to follow up on this, as it was pointed out in the Tom Waits thread that at least one track on Alice has been remixed. "Table Top Joe" now has a trumpet come in for the last 45 seconds or so that wasn't there on the original 2002 release. I like the addition and think it makes the track better. Not sure if any other tracks have been remixed, but that one is definitely different.

Doubt it. Especially when they paid money to have it remastered. Probably be sourced from those hi-rez

to this note: I got the same email and went to buy some files I'd long considered, but hesitated because they were "nice to haves" but at 25% considered it a good time. Has HDTracks removed a bunch of DSD files? Specifically there was a Norah Jones "Come Away w/ Me" DSD option that is no longer there. I know I bought "Captain Fantastic' DSD from HDT and it's no longer there either... have they been cutting back their library? (and if this is a long discussed topic I just fell into, I apologize).

Possibly the license for these DSD versions expired. It seems the Norah Jones would be the AP remaster.
