Attending a free concert tonight at the Library of Congress, of the Spektral Quartet with Winston Choi ZORN Le Mômo Library of Congress McKim Fund Commission WADADA LEO SMITH Quartet no. 9 LEWIS String Quartet 1.5: Experiments in Living I also have a ticket for tomorrow after noon for the same artists playing Schoenberg and Milton Babbitt but my wife wants me to spend time with her instead. I tried signing up for a bunch of the free concerts but no surprise, only the concerts of modern music didn't sell out instantly. I do also have a ticket to see the Boston Modern Orchestra Project in June. That one still has a few tickets left. Had no idea about this one. Ordered. Mind you, I wonder how avant garde it really is. I recently purchased Highsmith by Ikue Mori and that one is more of a head-scratcher for me.
I've been close to buying Highsmith several times, but it's been a bit pricey. Once it hits the £9 shipped mark, then I'm all over it!
Although I've seen Mori perform live with Zorn I just don’t respond well to her electronics, so Taborn was the draw to me here. Actually, that opens up a question that may be worth discussing in this thread: how avant garde is too avant garde for you? I've listened to a fair amount over the years but I find that my instincts are still pretty conservative. Now playing: John Zorn & Milford Graves, 50th Birthday Celebration Volume 2
Taborn was the draw for me too, and I really like it. It is pretty out there though. If you do downloads, it's available on boomkat for £7.99 Craig Taborn and Ikue Mori - Highsmith - Boomkat
