Has anyone checked Sade Diamond Life first Japan press 32・8P-61 for pre-emphasis? What about the first Japan press for Promise. Those came out in 84 and 85 which I understand is right around the time pre-emphasis was used.

The CSR Japan Wheels mimics my US Steve Hall LP cut EQ wise in the vocals, - of course different formats will give different results due to my playback and recording gear.
If you want samples of both I'll Dropbox em

While I don't have that one, I have the first European issue, CDCBS______ (CSR Japanese pressing) and it doesn't have PE.

    ////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

Regarding selling CDs, I, in contrary to what has been posted above, found it easy to sell valuable/rare/in-demand CDs, as long as you price them right (right pricing = to offer lower price for specific item in specific condition than anyone else). Of course, if you expect to get more for them than what is current bottom price offered by other sellers, then you might be in for a long wait, in case you decide to sell something.

When I sell something I sometimes make copy of that, who cares if it's legal or not. As long as you don't sell these copies or upload somewhere for cops to see, no one will ever know. And I don't feel bad for that, after all, if everyone bought as much music as I do, music industry would flourish. It's the people who always torrent everything instead of buying that should feel bad.

OK, would be interesting to compare. First song of CD would be enough to see if there's audible difference between what I have.

I respectfully suggest the discussion about whether it is legal/ethical to keep ripped music after selling a CD be taken to another thread. It is off-topic here.

Don't really think it got off topic. It was asked why people keep discs that they have ripped. A sense of legal/moral obligation is a legitimate reason so people were mostly just answering that.

I agree that any debate as to whether or not it is legal/moral does not belong here, but most of the "mentions" of it have been fine in my opinion as people are just stating their practices and justification, not arguing about it.

Per member Steve Martin's post here:
    Pre emphasis list?
and my own confirmation–this entry should read "tracks 6-9 only".

    new addition, as I expected

    Reimy - "R" (2nd album) 1984.09 Denon 35C31-7250 matrix C-31-7250 1A6-51 (Jan. 1985 repressing)
    flagged in subcode only

so, all three of her Denon/Nippon Columbia albums have PE, though fourth one, which I don't own yet, was on a different label, from 1986, and pressed by Victor, so odds are very high it doesn't have PE, everything after that probably too

I just checked, and they sound the same.

Also, just listened and compared pressed CD as it is against burned CD-R with flags again. While the CD-R doesn't have 'sharp' highs, it is perfectly listenable, while the pressed without flags has those ear-hurting highs. At usual higher volume it's almost unlistenable. I have no clue how it was intended to sound, but cassette-like sound of CD-R with PE flags is more acceptable than that of pressed CD, which sounds like treble knob was turned all the way up on usual well-mastered CD. I don't know how old are you, fellow listeners/collectors (I've read that human ability to hear highs decreases with age), but try playing this CD from the first song to your kids (or someone elses) and ask them if it sounds OK.

My guess on what happened with this album would be that they had a tape copy of master to make CDs from, which was originally digital with PE, and flags were lost at some point.

I can get it to sound perfect when listening to burned CD-R with flags, and slightly turning up the treble knob (around 2 o'clock angle)

I have an Austrian DADC Diamond Life and I don't believe it has PE. I have an old US DADC of Promise and I don't have that marked as having PE either, but I could double check either of these if anyone's curious.

    a new entry:
Yuming (Yumi Matsutoya) - Pearl Pierce 1982 CA35-1001 (released 1982.11.1, this is the very first pressing)
    matrix CA35-1001-2 1A1 /crude font/, hub stamp: MANUFACTURED BY CBS/SONY RECORDS INC.
    flagged in subcode only

CA32 issue of this title probably has same mastering too

It's possible. I had an early US version that sounded very bright, but unfortunately I wasn't checking PE very thoroughly in those days. I don't have it anymore either..

I can say though, that the Japan (Sanyo) for Europe Bellaphon Vital Signs does not have PE like the early Japan (Canyon) disc. That might be a clue. Never know until you check though.

My US Diamond Life CD sounds like it has PE, though the flags probably weren't set up correctly as EAC says it's not there. After applying some de-emph EQ through Audacity, the album sounds smoother and more natural. Should we add this one to the list? The old US Promise doesn't have PE, though I can't say whether or not the Japanese version does.

The stock US version of Bonnie Tyler's Faster Than the Speed of Night also sounds like it has PE.

We need to verify a Japan first for Diamond Life. I don't think guesses should be added to the list.
It's possible the 1984 may carry it but the 1985 mastering does not have it.
I've got a Swiss For US silver {Shar-Day} Diamond Life, 1985. Which matches the 85 US Portrait (the one submitted on the DR site). Nice sounding disc. No issues with her vocals.
I just scanned the Q - no tag present.

It sounds like what happened with the Japan 1st 33PD of Master Of Reality/Volume 4 and the Canadian Streetheart S/T albums where pre-emphasis was missed being added in the mastering.

I don't have Bellaphon Vital Signs but I might be getting the Intercord Germany one . I wonder if it has PE ? (I guess I hope not ) All ready had the Original Japan and it was played in all kinds of cd players not PC and it never sounded good .

How does one come to a definitive answer on the pre-emphasis question when EAC does not detect it?

If one of the apps known to detect all forms (TOC or SUBCODE) does not detect it, then the CD does not have pre-emphasis flagged and should not be on THIS list. To prove a definitive error you would have to match EAC levels to a release that does have pre-emphasis flags.

There should be a separate thread for releases that are suspected to have missing flags, or that people think sound better with deemphasis applied, but I vote for keeping this list to those with actual flags.

I agree, needs to have actual flags to be in this list.

One can also use a CD player with a pre-emphasis light or a meridian 518 or similar with a transport that reports via SPDIF or an old enough version of EAC with a drive that reports the flags.

Or the current version of XLD with "don't detect pregap,... " unchecked. Which will add detected PRE flags to the CUE files it saves.

Can you de-emphasis tracks that are already ripped to apple lossless or do you have to rip to aiff (I'm on a Mac) with XLD and them de-emphasis them in xACT then convert to apple lossless? Some of my old Survivor CD's I think have pre-emphasis and since I still have them I can re-rip if needed.

You can convert from Apple Lossless back to AIFF with xACT, then deemphasize and convert back to Apple Lossless. Don't need to re-rip.
