I think Kubrick was afraid to tell him "hey, stick to the script!" Gunny would've tore him a new one!

  2. Yeah, my father, a Vietnam vet told me that The Boys in Company C's portrayal of boot camp was a lot more realistic from his point of view than any other film. Although my father was Army, he thought that FMJ was over the top in general.

I think Kubrick took Lee's cues from the 1978 film and wanted him to turn it up a few notches.

Rumor has it that Lee lost out to Dale Dye early in the game, as military consultant for some notable films. I think Lee carried that with him.

I believe his wife recently passed. Not uncommon for the spouse to follow.

I used to see him regularly at a shooting range east of Los Angeles. Always an affable fellow.

You apparently don’t work where I work. In closed door meetings especially where performance or people are doing poorly. (But I get your point.)

Nevertheless, this was a great performance by a truly gifted artisan who excelled at his craft.

Marines take offense to this statement.

While I was not in the Marine Corps myself, I have several close family members who were.

In the words of Gunnery Sgt. Hartman:

Marines die, that's what we're here for. But the Marine Corps lives forever. And that means YOU live forever.“

  9. The stuff portrayed by R. Lee in Full Metal Jacket is a bit over the top...but not by much...not much at all.

The best part of you may have run down, but you'll live on in the cinema. RIP, Lee.

  11. He did play an Army drill in The Boys from Company C.

His role in FMJ has got to be in the top 5 acting performances in cinema history.

I'd completely forgotten he was one of the chopper pilots in "Apocalypse Now;" thanks to the guys at militarycorruption.com for reminding me!

He played a lot of minor roles that you've probably seen but totally forgot about. I was quite surprised while reading his IMDb page.... plenty of instances of "I know I've seen that movie but I don't remember him being in it!" ;)
