Is this really an issue anymore? Don't all cd players now decode PE?

  2. Yost

Yost “It’s only impossible until it’s not”

Most dedicated CD players will, some modern “universal” Blu-ray/DVD/CD players will not.

But when ripping CDs to your computer, the data is transferred as is, and not automatically decoded to sound as it should. So audio tracks with PE need to be post-processes to sound correct.

onlyacanvasky Your guess is as good as mine.

I just got this issue of that album last week and yes, it’s very sharp sounding, isn’t it? I’d make a comparison with my Total Eclipse Of The Heart 45 but the 45 is an Aussie copy, probably a few generations down and might not be an accurate representation.

I’ve also recently wondered about Wings of Desire by Jennifer Rush but it’s so late, it might just be sizzling late 80s production.

What if you're just doing a disc-at-once rip to a blank disc?

The flag will not transfer over. I've tried
Most players will, but it's the old discs with the flag set in the SUB Q channel that newer players are hit or miss with. (Oppo does not, only table of contents)
I sent Marantz an email on Sunday about SUBQ and haven't heard back yet.

I had to order a Oppo 203 before there gone . I think I have only 3 cds with the PE so I can get around that . It's just to good of a player to pass up , It's going to be used for all my music and movie media .

    Dear Sir,
Thank you for your enquiry. We (still) support correct playback of CD, which have been recorded with pre-emphasis. We do not indicate this with information in the display,
but internally the correct processing is done.

    Sincerely,
    Sound United Customer Support (Marantz)

Yes, sorry as I should have been more specific, although those who have owned Marantz players will know they have previously fully supported pre-emphasis TOC / SUB Q

It's just a big PIA. Eventually one of these days I plan on buying a higher end player. But it's going to need to be able to do it for me to make a purchase.

Never thought that there was a version of Phil Collins Face Value that has pre-emphasis.
Phil Collins - Face Value (1984, Virgin CDV 2185)
    Matrix: CDV 2185 2891088 03
Printed in West Germany by Neef, Wittingen

It was not flagged in toc, but in the subcode with eac 0.95pb0.3

Ah, that blue face pressing of "Face Value" has several DR16 tracks, even a DR18 track. But it probably was metered without knowledge that it was mastered with pre-emphasis. That explains the DR elevated over that of the target mastering.

About Tubular Bells CDs with catalog number "CDV 2001": Only those with matrix "CDV 2001 2891087 01" are confirmed to have pre-emphasis. I am positive that the one with matrix "CDV 2001 :.: MASTERED BY NIMBUS" does not have pre-emphasis. Other variants are in discussion.
Most appreciated Mike Oldfield Tubular Bells CD version?

Thanks to a lame discogs seller who listed it under the wrong entry, I can say that the Phil Collins - Face Value with silver face (red lettering) CDV2185 - no barcode - made in UK, mastered by NIMBUS does NOT have PE like the blue face does.

Let's please (strictly) keep all Dolby A talk here: DolbyA or Pre-emphasis, which is it or both?
and allow the thread you are reading to remain on its long-set course, re: pre-emphasis. Thank you!

Nope. I have a brand new Yamaha CD300. Their customer service people replied:

"The CD-S300 does not support de-emphasis, given that most CD's around nowadays conform to Red Book standards."

I like the sound of this player, on my non-pre-emph cds, so I'll keep it and remaster those CDs to CDRs. But, I think this is totally irresponsible on the part of manufactures....

Well, since pre-emphasis is part of the Red Book standard, what they are actually saying is that their player doesn't conform to Red Book standards.
