Why not find a set of realistic speakers, a kenwood amp, and a jvc turntable from the 80’s on Craigslist. Bet you could do it all for $300. Better yet, Cerwin Vegas, and you’ll know she’ll be throwing the best parties. Sad they won’t be playing any Beastie Boys though.

Slap one of those on there, and you’ve made it to 2018 in flash.

Maybe get one of those devices that lifts the tonearm when the record is over. If she is new to LPs then this might prevent a lift and drop mistake.

This is a good point for the noob. Unless you are a DJ minding the decks, fully manual turntables are an annoyance.

    Turntable:

Technics SL-D2 semi automatic. Well built, reliable, can use many nice cartridge options well. The best first DD for under $200 in nice order.

    Speakers:

ELAC Debut is as fine as you can get for sane money.

    Amplifier:

NAD in your budget is nice, sounds excellent, and as reliable as the price point gets.

I bought from Parts Express a SMSL Q5 Pro Class D 40 watt per channel power amp with line level subwoofer output. I saved enough money I also sent a Dayton 10" subwoofer to my kid in college. Killer sound fills up apartment they rented located just off the campus. Great party system, son stated always loud enough with 100 people attending. Amp is $114 & sub $109- both included shipping. I also sent Bose 201 Series III speakers with Focal tweeter upgrade ($30 a pair). Great sounding compact speakers, tweeter upgrade makes a huge difference. Son used music files from internet. He said per others it was the best sound system at the college- 22,000 students University of Florida, Gainesville, FL.

Man I’m down with NAD, has a soft spot in my audiophile heart. A high end brand in my younger years (I’m 49) and still commands respect. Heck yea! NAD!
    Or Parasound..hehe:)

The next gen PS Audio Sprout is due to be released soon. The first one got good reviews, though I have no personal experience with it.

I'm learning about it here. Massdrop: Community-Driven Commerce My guess is more money than the NAD but maybe better guts? I've always been intrigued by it but at the time was only interested in spending so much for the office and have since moved to a DAC/Pre > powered monitors as I don't do vinyl. I remember another thread where someone got both and they quickly went with the Sprout. Edit: here was the thread Need Help Getting Started with Improved Home Audio

Yep ... I'm with Carl. Don't confuse your love for high end audio with hers unless you know she is really into audiophile stuff. Many people are very happy with simple audio solutions, even if they are not the best quality. In the future, she may go direction, or she may not. But remember, there's a reason very few females participate here.

My question comes from my doubts about the viability of a vinyl collection in a dorm setting. She probably won't be the only one using it, even with her knowledge.

I've done that. My LPs had to be jealously guarded all the time.
