Name a great band or a favorite band, and name the two records that define them best. Maybe tell why you feel that way about those recordings. I am not a completist, and I love a wide range of music, so knowing two essential records would help me be satisfied I have heard the core of a band's work.

This is a fun idea, yet I'm trying to think of an artist where I can mostly define them in two key albums. You'd think it would be a fairly easy thing, even if it isn't a comprehensive summary, yet I'm still stumped in picking only two albums when it comes to expressing the range of my top artists.

I think what makes it difficult is that most top artists of mine have more than two main ranges (or peaks) of diversity.

I am sincerely thinking though... :)

But that would be a FALSE satisfaction. You would be lying to yourself.

I can say that if you might be into a band like Chicago, you could get a general 1-2 punch of their stark career shift by buying, say, Chicago II and then buying Chicago 17.

That would give you a broad range on how different (and yet in some ways still similar) they were between 1970 and the early 1980's.

Yet even limiting the range to those two albums leaves out the smaller twists of evolution and diversity found on the likes of great albums such as Chicago V or Chicago VII.

As a result, as I first stated, this is hard to do! :)

Siouxsie & The Banshees - these two albums are, to me, their defining releases.

Juju - their fourth album, and the definitive culmination of an era. After Juju, the Banshees would never really sound the same as they continued to grow, musically from their post-punk roots. Juju is dark and outrageous, chugging along from track to track like a gleaming black train which only runs at night.

Peepshow - This ninth album, to me, is the peak of creative output by Sioux and company. I don't mean the best songs, or a peak of quality, but more a peak of creative ambition and style. In comparison to Juju, one can hear the leaps made by this band when it comes to composing music. The sound is polished, yet still experimental. Sioux's vocals are absolutely stellar. You can hear how much the band loved making this record - everybody sounds completely devoted to their craft. As one review put it - the "record bursts with [...] acts of imagination..."

    Steppenwolf and Steppenwolf The Second.

Their two biggest hits, plus deep cuts that don't take a backseat to the singles.

Van Halen S/T and Fair Warning. S/T was the introduction and you had to wonder what would come next. For me, their summit was Fair Warning just a little bit down the tracks. Sorry to anyone who disagrees but if you only could have two VH albums these are it, by far.
