Blows Against the Empire - Paul Kantner/Jefferson Starship

One of my favorite albums. I have four copies of the original release, which sort of defies reason. But that’s OK. Here’s an excerpt of the review by Ed Ward in the February ‘71 issue of Rolling Stone. I don’t think Ed liked it.

“If Paul Kanter really thinks that the pap he’s serving up here is a blow against the empire, I suggest he take a bowl of oatmeal and a spoon and start throwing the oatmeal at some building he’d like to see topple, just to observe how long it will take.”

I love ELP’s Works 1. Palmer is smoking on his side and Lake’s side is lovely. Pirates and Fanfare are great. Works 2, pretty damn weak.

The bashed albums that I like are usually because I was in a really good place when they came out, and they bring back a lot of great memories. For example, Heart's "Private Audition" came out right when I graduated from high school, and Asia's "Astra" came out when I graduated from college. In any other time or place, I probably wouldn't have given them a pass!

The thing about the Linn Drum programming that Ian Anderson did on Walk Into Light, Under Wraps and Crest Of A Knave is that he did not just make a loop and set it on repeat, he programed fills and variations that make the parts very natural and playable by a human drummer as Doane Perry demonstrated wonderfully on the tours.

Terence Trent D'Arby's second album "Neither Fish Nor Flesh". Some outrageously beautiful music on this album.

It's true, there was a time when what is now 'classic' rock from the 70s was considered 'that new hard rock crap'.

NEIL YOUNG/TRANS: I loved this record from the day I bought it back in 1982. Though I like the vocoder stuff a lot more than the Trans Band stuff.
WINGS/BACK TO THE EGG: I love this less these days, but back in 1979 my buddy and I used to crank this in his 75 Nova cruising down Woodward Bl.
