From their beginning to the end or if they're still recording, who has the longest list of songs[not just hits]would it be-The Beatles-The Temptations-The Beach Boys-Marvin Gaye-The Rolling Stones-Aretha-The Four Tops-The Impressions-James Brown-The Miracles,or some other artist?

What would you consider songs worth including? Number ones? Top tens? Top 40s? US or UK or worldwide? Or just quality songs? Just trying to narrow the scope.

I think it would be hard to beat Dylan in this category. He's still at it, and every year we've been getting multi-volume box sets that unearth new nuggets. And he straddles the line between songwriter and performer, so limiting it to performances of his own compositions would cover only part of the story. And Sign on the Cross, for example, isn't exactly a great composition, but it's a great example of his genius, and once you open those gates it seemingly goes on forever.

Would have to be Dylan based on sheer longevity--1961-present--and overall high level of quality throughout.
Stevie Wonder and Paul McCartney have been around as long, but Wonder hasn't done much the past couple of decades and Paul --who's had far more "hits"---hasn't kept up the pace of Dylan. Ditto The Rolling Stones.

Sorry...I consider myself a Dylan fan, but albums like "Self Portrait, "Dylan", "Saved", "Empire Burlesque", "Knocked out Loaded", "Under the Red Sky", "Dylan and the Dead", "Christmas in the Heart" and the latest Sinatra desecrations are not "high quality".

  16. How about Neil Young or Willie Nelson.

Well, I didn't say there weren't any low points. But no one else has bounced back as many times as Dylan has--and I'd say that even taking most of the albums you mentioned into consideration, he has a pretty good track record over nearly 60 years.

From googling 'most prolific musicians' sub-category Who is the most recorded artist in history?: Dr K J Yesudas an Indian singer has recorded over 40,000 songs. Another Indian singer Asha Bhosle who has over 13,000. In 2011, Asha was officially acknowledged by the Guinness Book of World Records as the most recorded artist in music history.

Neil Young is still releasing albums, new and old, at an astonishing rate. I think he's taken the lead at this point.
