    Excellent, dark horse candidate! Very high quality although of course one half of one Sabbath song has as many riffs as the Kinks' whole career...which is why my candidate cannot lose!

    Although a lot of his material is more compositional based, Steve Vai writes some monster riffs and many songs can contain a bunch.

    I agree that Iommi is probably the best answer but Ritchie Blackmore deserves some consideration.

    ...been following this thread and (correct me if I'm wrong), one name I've not seen is Alex Lifeson (maybe not the "best", but well worth a shout out). Rush had many excellent, catchy, heavy riffs rom 74-80 (and beyond, but I'm one of those earlier era Rush fans. lol).

    If Ritchie is in the mix, add Alex! (I am a Blackmore fan).
