There are some alternates in the vaults. I used to physically own some of the acetates, and a Capitol "insider" confirmed a few years back that the actual tapes existed. They are, IMO, long overdue for release. This album was incredibly well recorded, both in mono and stereo. Hopefully "they" will handle it with extreme care and in a style that suits the recordings. A hard or sterile sound would be antithetic to a proper presentation.
I want a Wee Small Hours deluxe! Thematically, is this album similar? I have never heard it. Wee Small Hours has that perfect feel when you're feeling down.
It would be great if Steve could do it, however, and I hate to be indelicate, but based on the sound quality of many of the recent Sinatra releases, I'd settle for almost anyone, Bob Norberg being an exception (yes I know he has retired), besides Larry Walsh.
Darker than Wee Small Hours; not as dark as No One Cares. I think that Wee Small Hours and Only the Lonely are both just about as close to perfect as any "mood music" albums get, and the orchestrations, singing, and recordings are perfect on both albums, I think.
I don't say this with hyperbole: It's an absolute classic. Arguably Sinatra's finest album. (Everybody has their own views on "best," but I think this album is pretty-much universally "right up there," at minimum.)
Only the Lonely is one of the greatest albums ever, by any artist. I resent the fact that I didn’t “discover” it until last year. I’ve listened to it countless times since then, each time hearing something new. I really hope this version is well mastered. And on vinyl. I’d love a version I can recommend to my friends without them accidentally picking up the Norberg.
Yes, from this fully-never-released (or am I forgetting something???) session: ...and It's a Lonesome Old Town, from the regular session, but unedited, with a different trombone solo than the released version.
It's easily my favorite Sinatra album. I hope a Hi-Rez version is included on some level in this deluxe edition, if possible. We got the the gorgeous-sounding MFSL CD, but I am greedy and want to hear it in even better fidelity.
Only The Lonely has very recently become one of my favorite albums of all time as just this past year I got hold of a copy of the wooden Capitol Concepts CD box set for the first time. I will have this baby on pre-order as soon as its available to purchase. Here's hoping for a stellar remaster!
Best news ever! I‘m very happy with my Mono MFSL and the Stereo Walsh remix- but a deluxe edition seems to be a great idea.
Splendid news! I'm still hoping for the ultimate stereo versions of the original mix (both, vinyl and digital) ...
Look forward to this. I have long wanted the MOFI, but the 2nd hand prices are beyond my modest means
