So based on that trailer, it's the Streisand Star is Born but instead of rock 'n' roll, it's country.

Kind of agree, but can’t a great story be retold?

Yes, a great story can be retold, but sometimes in the haste to remake a classic movie, or to recount a great story, the studios conjure a witches cauldron of too much CGI special effects, rely on typical star power, employ clunky dialogue, shoehorn in implausible plot devices, exercise tedious pacing, squeeze in awkward editing, etc.

All generalities, but there are so many factors that can sink a great story.

Sometimes I think the Movie Studios overconfidently bank in the fact that since their movie is based upon:
    Remakes
    Sequels
    Comic Books
    Toys
    Books
    Theatrical Plays

    ... that’s enough to guarantee a hit.
    It’s not.

Personally, I'd rather see a black actor tackle the role in white face.

totally agree, but back to this movie - i think it's about retelling a great story, at least that's the vibe i've gotten watching bradley cooper talk about.
plus, robert deniro has seen it and thinks it's great. i am really looking forward to it.

Bradley Cooper's backing band in this film is Lukas Nelson and Promise Of The Real. Bradley asked them after he had saw them play with Neil Young at Desert Trip. Also, Neil Young's former road manager Eric Johnson plays one of Bradley's managers. Who knows, maybe even Elliot Roberts is in the film, like Almost Famous!

Lukas co-wrote some of the songs in the film as well.

    Bradley Cooper as Kris
    Gaga as Babs.

Regular as clockwork. Can they regain this tale for the ages from the dusty old LP sleeves of every parent's record collection? And will the soundtrack be any better?

As much as I love Gaga, I can't claim to be excited about the movie.

I'll hope for the best, though.

And in terms of this being a beaten horse, at least they went 42 years between versions of the story! From 1st to 2nd was only 17 years, and then 22 years between 2nd and 3rd...

The only version I’ve seen was the Streisand one. I didn’t think much of it. Surprised Gaga got to headline a (supposedly) big movie like this, though she has the voice for it. Haven’t seen Bradley Cooper in much lately either, but he’s a decent enough actor.

Why does Gaga's presence surprise you? She's a major star.

Also, if what I found in the Internet is accurate, the 2018 "Star" only cost $30 million - pretty low-budget by modern standards...

I don’t think of her as a major star, I guess. She seems like someone who peaked years ago.

I thought the trailer was very good when I saw it a couple of weeks ago in the theater. Studio as moved the release to awards release season so they must think they have a good one on their hands. Personally I dunno if anything can beat Judy Garland and James Mason. Never saw the Janet Gaynor-Fredric March original.

Always thought the third version was a real missed opportunity for Elvis.

I kinda like Kristofferson but I do not like his singing voice and Elvis in the stadium sequences could have been much more convincing.
