First few times I heard Bruce Springsteen's Born To Run on the radio, I was sure it was David Bowie.

First time I heard "Bring Me Some Water" by Melissa Etheridge, I got excited about the new rock direction Tina Turner was taking...

You beat me to it. I’ll also add their song ‘The Air That I Breathe’ - thought for sure that was The Bee Gees.

I had the same reaction when I first heard "Sultans of Swing," by Dire Straits: I thought it might be Bob Dylan. It was the best he'd sounded in awhile. Apparently Dylan felt the same way. He ran out and hired them to be his backing band for Slow Train Coming.

When I was a younger, I heard "Don't Pull Your Love" and thought it was Elvis. It's by "Hamilton, Joe Frank & Reynolds".

Very hard to recreate this mindset after 6000 listens, but I distinctly remember being pretty impressed with "Smells Like Teen Spirit" the first time i heard it on Maryland radio, and not knowing Nirvana (I'd heard BLEACH once in a record store previously) had a major label debut coming out, thought it was a really hot and interesting new Joan Jett song.

Felt a bit reinforced in this reaction when they chose her as one of the women to replace Kurt at the RRHOF. At any rate, if you CAN hear Teen Spirit through the haze of repetition, maybe you can understand why I thought that.

Not quite other artist but sample-age equivalent, but i was 1000 percent sure the first few times i heard "Hey Ya" by Outkast that the central synth line was a sample from some old Cure song, and first few times heard their "The Way You Move" was sure it was built on an Earth Wind Fire sample, and the band I guess heard something similar because later covered it--freaking me out when I saw it listed on their ESSENTIAL cd since I thought I had previously investigated and debunked my own "that song is built on a EWF sample" theory.

First time I heard the Kinks' "Victoria" on my cheap transistor radio, I thought it was the Doors. And I was hearing "Victoria" as "Big Starry Eye."

Los Bravos - Black is Black (1966)

For years I thought it was Gene Pitney

For lovers of 60's beat, this film is a corker! :agree:

There was a song called "It's So Nice to Be With You" by an act called Gallery, who I never heard of before or since.

When I heard the song I was certain it was Tony Orlando & Dawn.

When I first heard "Lady Writer", which was the first Dire Straits song I ever heard, I thought "That's the best I've heard from Bob Dylan in a long time."
