Currently enjoying Dark Star > Eyes Of The World 2/26/73 via DiP 28, prompted by the DS recently coming up. I haven’t played this in a while, glad I did.
Me too, I think I only have 4 shows from that year and one is that vile DP20, Dick's 13 is fantastic however which makes DP20 such a head scrather.
The run represented by Dick's Picks 13, the Piscataway show, and also the one on 30 Trips are all excellent gigs I return to time and again.
Dave’s 20 has some highlights, but is a below average show. I’ve liked every other 81 show I’ve heard more. I know it was released due to the reel recording and a great set list on paper. It’s not terrible, but it’s not in the top 20-30 shows of the year.
bzfgt gets it, lol. more alike than unlike, especially these days. admittedly, the difference was probably considerably more substantial in 1981.
OH F$#K. Ordered, naturally, the new box yesterday. Today (about half an hour ago) I slipped while in the attic, doing the classic foot-through-ceiling thing. Hello big hole, bye bye $$$$$$$. Wife has already mentioned yesterday's order - with a sigh and head shake... Have put the Winterland 73 box on and logged in to here as a distraction, ish.
I was very excited to hear Phil using a Fender Jazz bass on DaP 20 and the results were very shelf-worthy. And there it remains and shall continue to do so. On the other hand, his work in '90-'91 on his Ken Smith 6-banger is top-shelf. Lots of shelves goin' on.
Don't do it! I'd suggest the 9/10/91 show from the porch crusher if you have it. Upon my own recommendation above, I finally pulled that one out and saw disc 3 and immediately slapped it in. Then I saw that disc 3 was a continuation of what starts on disc 2, so I promptly removed 3 and slapped 2 in there. Lesh's Smith is grinding away at the enamel on my teeth and it feels so good. What a second set: Help--> Slip--> Franklin's Estimated--> Dark Star--> Drums--> Space--> Dark Star--> Miracle (after hearing the 1/15/79 Miracle--> Shakedown, I became a lifelong fan of this one)--> Standing on the Moon--> Lovelight E: Baby Blue! And Branford shares the stage...
I only knew of it appearing in ‘Dark Star’ I guess - famously the 2/13/70 show, no? I guess I didn’t recognize it as the same thing.
Thank you, Thank you, Thank you, I feel as though I've been granted a stay of execution... Also worthy of a trip into 1991 is 10/31.
This Estimated from 9/10/91 is quite the ride. I normally avoid this song, but I may need to revisit some of them. Of course, the spectre of Dark Star to follow doesn't hurt the anticipation much. Just got there as I typed that...
saw a couple nights of the garden run that year but not that one, and the previous year i went to four out of the six and was on a train back home the fianl night of course. i caught branford in los angeles in 94 but alas no DS. it was enjoyable but for that particular tune it takes away the darkness
The out jam on Estimated from 7/1/78 is worthy of your attention. I know you have that box. Plus the Jerry solo on Wharf Rat is all-time as is Phil’s counterpoint.
12/18/73 is playing on Sirius GD channel at the moment. That's one of the top 20 best "not released by GDP yet" shows IMO. Amazing stuff.
They did release a short bit of "Let It Grow" from that show as a patch for the 12/19/73 version on the first Dick's Picks.
