Red Rose Speedway. And Off the Ground Complete is essentially a double. I liked it way better than the single album as originally released.

Man you need to read the OP set up for criteria...the Beach Boys are not on his list. :)

And it’s certainly a shame, the Beach Boys should be on every list! :D

If the lineup that recorded the 1982 demos had stuck together & recorded that set of songs, there was the makings of a very fine double there - perhaps with a few Dez-written tunes in the mix to make-up the running time (you could pull a few from the first DC3 album quite easily)

    Roxy Music.

Seriously, you could put together a really good double album by combining Stranded & Here Come the Warm Jets.

I had a go at it a while back, will have to fish up the tracklist...

The Who had 2 potential double-albums - Lifehouse and The Who Sell Out.

As the reissues have shown, there's plenty of outtake tracks from the 'Sell Out' sessions that are as good as what made the cut - in some cases BETTER than what made the cut.. and there's plenty of adverts/jingles as well that could have made the concept easily run to 4 sides.

When you have a song like Glittering Girl locked in a vault while Silas Stingy ends up on the album (Sorry John fans) it's a classic case of an artist/band being too close to the music to make good objective decisions

The Stones could have done one around the 78-81 period, they had loads of tracks lying around.

But I don't want any of their existing albums to be double albums so I don't know...

Absolutely agree. This, followed up by Arthur would've been quite the one-two punch for the Kinks.

In that spirit, I proudly nominate C,S,N&Y then. They could have easily released a double LP in any year from '71 - '75.

Definitely not Rush. A double album rock opera by Sabbath (Ozzy or Dio) would be interesting.

I still think that Prince should've made "Purple Rain" a double (though one right after "1999" probably wasn't wise):

    SIDE ONE
    1) Let's Go Crazy (uncut version)
    2) Take Me With U (uncut version)
    3) The Beautiful Ones (uncut version)

    SIDE TWO
    1) Computer Blue ('Hallway Speech' version)
    2) Darling Nikki (uncut version) / I Am Fine
    3) Wednesday

    SIDE THREE
    1) When Doves Cry
    2) I Would Die 4 U (Uncut Version)
    3) Baby I'm A Star (Uncut Version)

    SIDE FOUR
    1) Purple Rain (Uncut Version)
    2) Father's Song

Foghat Live should've been a double album.
Same with Pat Travers - Live, Go For What You Know.

Granted, Genesis was making a point to write/play leaner, but this...is pretty darned solid. Prog/pop blend on side 1, the epic on side 2, straight pop one side 3 (with excellent placement of "Whodunit," which I happen to like), and then cast-offs on deep cuts to close it out for side 4.

I can see fans complain about this as a concept, or even in execution. But I like pretty much all of the Abacab-era material, and this drives home what an epic roll they were on at the time.

Ahh. Thank you. I messed with it for a while and even though I think Abacab is fine as is they made so much worthwhile material it needed to be heard.

You should see my revision of IT and the single album version of WCD. :)
