Hound Dog was the record that started it all for me when I was a kid. I remember watching that label go 'round and round while I stood there transfixed.
Rat-a Tat-Tata Tat-Tata Tat-Tata Ta BOOM! That was IT, I was going to be a musician, and I am. I've met many wonderful people, and had and still have, a great time playing.

Thanks DJ, and RIP old friend.

Very sad news. I have always thought of the drums on Hound Dog as making it the first real rock record.

His drumming on those Elvis sides is unsurpassed IMO. A Big Hunk O'Love is one fantastic rocking record, the hardest Presley ever rocked!

    R.I.P DJ Fontana :(

One of the greats, not many drummers who could swing a rock song like he did.

Absolutely, Torch. Those drums are so B-I-G sounding. DJ is the drummer I think of when I think of Elvis. As good as Buddy Harmon, Ronnie Tutt and Larrie London are, they didn't have that "Playing behind a stripper" kind of feel that DJ had. It was just tight enough to hold it together yet loose enough to make you feel it could go off the rails at any moment.

Wow. that is all i can type right now. he was the first drummer. in a way, right?..i didn't have any idea or thought that he could still be alive. How I take stuff for granted. He was the one on the drums with Elvis. Nothing more needs to be said. He played on so many sides and with many artists. What a tremendous gift and joy he gave to us. You will be remembered as long as there is rock n roll.
