Sinead O’Conner’s beautiful acapella performance in 1992 is one of the greatest moments in American television history

Sigourney Weaver and Buster dong "Baby It's Cold Outside" in 1986 was another good one.

How about Deee-Lite doing "Groove is in the Heart" with Bootsy on bass, February 1991?

Actually I don't rate it as being the best (although it was pretty good)... I was just in the audience at that show. :D

Of the 100 or so Thurs lunchtime musical guest rehearsals I got to watch, the coolest to see in a room with about 10 people were Neil Young (with Stray Gators more or less) and AC/DC. Other fun ones U2, Britney, Madonna, Jimmy Page with Puffy.

After seeing this on SNL in 1992 I went to the record store the next day and bought the album on CD

It's the same for just about all SNL footage, so most is on Vimeo or Dailymotion.

Well, it may not be a good reason for the people who want to see it on YouTube, but the reason NBC keeps taking that stuff down is because not only do they sell the complete SNL on DVDs, they stream archival episodes on Hulu and Streampix and I think Amazon, for paying customers. Ergo they don't like people getting it freebie.

I know it’s been mentioned before but Elvis Costello’s SNL performance changed everything for me in terms of my music listening experience. I was 16 years old at the time and within a few months, I had pretty much abandoned mainstream rock for punk & new wave.

It's definitely not the greatest (Elvis Costello and the Replacements tie for that honor), but I'm going to throw a shout out to Terrence Trent D'arby who I remember just blew me away with his SNL performance.

As mind blowing as Elvis was, one can only imagine what would have happened had the original musical guest that night been able to make it into the country!
