Sturgill Simpson was the greatest in recent memory...no competition there.

All time? Can’t make that call.

Thanks! I've never seen that one...

  3. 4 November 1978 SNL with Van Morrison doing "Wavelength".....there use to be a video on Youtube but sadly NBC always gets those taken off. However, it is Episode 4 of the 1978 season, available on the boxed set.

I watched it live East Coast Time on that night and was amazed.

Those of us who are Westerberg fanatics thought it was fantastic- the rest of the world would probably say good not great, lol. The band was:

    Paul Westerberg, guitar/vocal
Dave Minnehan, lead guitar, backing vocals (he's the guy who played with the reunion version of The Replacements)
Josh Freese, drums (Josh has done other work with P.W., great drummer!)
    Darren Hill: bass

I will go out on my own limb and vote for The Roches' "Hallelujah Chorus" (they had already been on the show before but this just knocked me out) or Gil Scott-Heron's "Johannesburg". Artists like those were abandoned by SNL once the show gained solid footing as no commercial benefit was to be drawn. You knew then these were folks you most likely would never see/hear otherwise, and sure enough, you really didn't. But I became big fans of both - and a few others from the very early years of the show - as a result.

I don't know what the greatest is, I don't have the authority to make that kind of claim. But Chris Isaac performing "Wicked Game" is an outstanding performance IMO.

As I always say, the Replacements reunion tour was really just Westerberg’s 1993 band with special guest Tommy Stinson...

Did you notice the censorship in Boys Keep Swinging where the line is: When you're a boy, other boys check you out.
The latter part was just erased.

  16. They actually don't, or at least haven't bothered to past the fifth season.

I stand corrected, I thought there was a box set at some point. But DVDs and even Blurays are passe now so it's not surprising.

How about Sinead O Connor? Was she ever let in again? :)

I would have loved to see this live!

This would be embarrassing in a room with 20 people. So when a whole nation (and social media) is watching too? Ouch.

The thing is she was supposed to sing live over that pre-recorded vocal, right? Like a guide or something, or to achieve a stronger lead vocal :p

From what I saw on Amazon, there are 2 volumes of "SNL" music on CD but I didn't see any other volumes of the music on DVD...

It was as much The Replacements as the 1991 tour with Foley on drums though.

Well, the 1991 tour had Slim. He's not an original member of course, but I consider him much more of a "real" Replacement than the hired guns on the reunion tour. Slim is from Minneapolis, was friends with Bob (who taught him the solos for their songs) and he played on the last two Mats albums. The reunion tour was as good as it could possibly be under the circumstances (and with who was available) but the 1991 tour was more of a legitimate Replacements experience.
