Here’s a list from Rotten Tomatoes that picks the movies that best represent each state. They claim that it is a requirement for the film to actually be filmed within the state so a film about Maine that was filmed in Vermont wouldn’t qualify for the list.

    https://editorial.rottentomatoes.com/article/50-states-50-essential-movies/

What do you all think of the picks? What do you agree or disagree with?

    Pretty interesting list. Some thoughts:

    - Strange that they included two animated films (Lilo & Stitch, The Iron Giant). I'm a huge fan of The Iron Giant but surely there is nothing more "Maine" than Stephen King? I believe The Shawshank Redemption was actually filmed in Ohio, but if they wanted to be strict about their "filmed in" criteria they shouldn't have put animated films on the list. Or just pick Pet Semetary, which WAS filmed in Maine. Seriously, Maine = Stephen King.

    - I'd have picked Jaws for Massachusetts.

    - Point Break was indeed a bizarre choice for California, one of the states with the most choices for films set in and depicting it.

    - Lots of North Dakota natives in the comment section seem to be ticked about Fargo being selected for their state, as that film was famously mostly filmed in (and mostly depicts) Minnesota and Minnesota culture.

    - Washington, D.C. left out again. I mean...All the Presidents Men would seem the obvious choice there.

    - I'm fairly happy with the picks for my two home states (Bull Durham and Singles).

Pet Sematary would be a good choice. I mean instead of animated movies they could have totally just picked Casper and 50 First Dates at least

There are many, many films set in California that would represent this state way more than Point Break ever could.

Before clicking the link I said to myself, "New Jersey better be represented by Clerks, or I'm calling B.S. on this entire list," haha.

Aaaaaand there it is! I approve! :D

Diner and Tin Men represent the time and the place more so, to me, than Hairspray.

Waters is more Mad Magazine, Levinson is more Frank DeFord.

Not surprised by Hoosiers being listed for Indiana, but I will say it's a great, great film.

Yes, as a former resident born and bred in Indiana, I can attest to the fact the the film is titled after a word that is often seen on their license plates. Big whoop. Why not Breaking Away, or better still A Christmas Story, a film that eerily conjured for me a perfect likeness of life in Terre Haute IN, at an age where I should have been too young to recognize it...but did. (Also, author Jean Shephard shares a name with my Uncle Gene. So sue me).

NOT! I won't even look at the list if they say that. Point Break represents a couple of beaches in LA. We're mostly farmland you know. How about the Grapes of Wrath? :uhhuh:

Inspired by his childhood in East Chicago and Hammon, Indiana. Cleveland, an older, working-class metropolis, offers many more architecturally-resonant staging opportunities (I admit I haven't been there since the very early '80s, and there was already progressive urban improvement underway) for the spiritual childhood of Jean Shephard's writing, although there's enough colloquial authenticity for many boomer-aged Midwesterners. The charm of the movie is less about the specificty of location, as the recognizable "days-gone-by" atmosphere, be it Ovaltine or a Chinese restaurant being the only thing open on Christmas. It's the same phenomenon that brought so many audiences in the '70s, an Archie Bunker they remembered from their own family histories.

I'm surprised On Golden Pond wasn't picked for my state. As far as I know, it's the most popular and critically acclaimed movie filmed here. I've never even heard of "In Your Eyes".
