It's comparable to the Soul organ sessions that you would normally associate Grant Green playing in for the era. I like the tunes although they don't quite reach the level of the BN releases. Grant's playing is in fine form and that's really what prompted me to buy. Fats does not show any exceptional sax work but holds his ground fairly well. Not an essential release but enjoyable.

Afro-Bossa | Concert In The Virgin Islands - Duke Ellington and his Orchestra (Reprise) CD

Double treat time with two superb big band studio albums on 1 CD from the Duke.

Afro-Bossa was recorded 1963 & Concert In The Virgin Islands was 1965.

I love the all the music here and the mastering on this CD edition is perfect.

Great Pacific Jazz album. I have the Blue Note CD reissue, which also has Dorham's Matador, originally released on United Artists. Pacific Jazz owner Richard Bock had the nasty habit of endlessly editing the music before releasing it, but that doesn't seem to be the case here.

Another great album and an excellent pressing. I wonder how much these SMJ pressings fetch these days.

Isn't it consensus in the jazz community that his greatest editing crime was to overdub drums on Jim Hall's originally drumless trio recording?

Not that much actually. I've seen OJC CDs command more on eBay if the title is scarce enough.

  23. J.A.W.

    J.A.W. Music Addict

The people at Blue Note/EMI who were involved in the CD reissues back in the 1980s-1990s had enormous problems trying to put the original recordings back together again, and some couldn't be "recreated". The tapes were an absolute mess.
