I'm curious to see what new material recorded after 1980 received a dedicated MONO mix. I'm not including fold downs, the recent barrage of re-releases from 60's artists, or live audience recordings taped on a mono source. I'm interested in situations where the artist made a conscious decision to mix a song to mono and release it that way. The only example off the top of my head would be Paul McCartney's "No Other Baby" single taken from Run Devil Run in 1999 but I'm sure there must be more. It sounds like the kind of thing Tom Petty or The Foo Fighters might have done for the sake of it so I'm just looking for examples. Thanks!
First one that springs to my mind is John Mellencamp's No Better Than This (recorded 2009, released 2010).
I know that a Philly band called The Suggestions recorded several songs (8 tracks mixed to mono) around 1980-82. AFAIK, none of these were released.
A.J. Croce’s Just Like Medicine from last year was a mono release. It was produced by the great Dan Penn.
Dutch band Beans & Fatback recorded their 2013 album With Skin Attached in mono. They wanted to go for that old R&B vibe. This was its lead single, Use Me.
The Pen Friend Club released their first four albums (2014-17) with both mono and stereo mixes of the songs included: 2014 - Sound of the Pen Friend Club 2015 - Spirit of the Pen Friend Club 2016 - Season of the Pen Friend Club 2017 - Wonderful World of the Pen Friend Club
Wasn't Neil Young's A Letter Home a mono recording? Don't think that record booth recorded to stereo unless Jack White retrofit the thing.
The Lees of Memory - Unnecessary Evil mixed in glorious mono in 2016: Unnecessary Evil, by The Lees Of Memory
I think Michelle Shocked recorded a whole album in mono on a portable tape recorder in the mid or late 1980s. I can't say I know a lot about her music but I had a room mate who was really really a big fan of hers and he played me this album a bunch of times.
The Mavericks, Mono Much reviled for its sound quality. I love it, including the way the vinyl sounds on my system.
I’m half-remembering that the Brian Jonestown Massacre made one of their albums entirely in mono. Haven’t heard it so I could be wrong but it sounds like something they’d do.
