One of the most criticized things when it comes to most 2LP releases is that they are too padded. In general, there are enough good/great songs for an album (or an album and a half), but the artist adds more subpar material to fill out the record. All that according to most opinions I see in here, of course.

However, in your opinion, are there any double LPs (or CDs, for that matter) that are completely stellar, song after song?

I personally couldn't think of any. I see them as some kind of "flawed perfection", as in the filler makes the album what it is, and the total is greater than the sum of its parts, and so forth. One that came close was Physical Graffitti, but Boogie With Stu kept it from being so :D

Great answer! I don't think live double albums count, as I was focusing on the studio side. But that's still one hell of a record! :D

London Calling is the first one that pops to mind for me. Other candidates would include Sonic Youth's Daydream Nation and Zappa's Uncle Meat.

I could think of plenty more too, but I'm busy watching a Stones blu-ray.

I love Physical Graffiti but (IMHO) Boogie with Stu is the perfect example of the definition of a filler track!

I am not a fan of Tommy but you do need all the songs to make the storyline work, hence no filler (it is a preposterous story, though)...

Prince Sign O the times - another classic album but (IMHO) Housequake and (particularly) The Ballad of Dorothy Parker fit so comfortably in the filler category.

Im really struggling to think of a double album with no filler - Zep's Physical Graffiti being the closest...
