What prompted this was watching the Today Show this morning (8/8/2018) while getting ready for work.
Promoting something at a concert Rod had two of the Today Show hosts join his backup singers on stage.
Oh my goodness ... I had seen him with the Faces in 71(?) and this was about as far from that as you could get.
I know we all age, but c'mon.

Back in 2008 I went to a Jeff Beck concert at a small L.A. venue called the El Rey. Rod was a surprise guest, came on stage and did a couple of songs with a surprised(?) Jeff Beck.
The voice was there, the attitude was there, was Rod coming back to his roots? Sadly no, a one off.

For me he jumped the shark during the "Do Ya Think I'm Sexy" period.

    You?

1972, I guess. Even though he had a good song or two after 1971, Every Picture Tells A Story and A Nod's As Good As A Wink...To A Blind Horse are the final platters for me.

There's a definite drop-off in quality post-Blondes Have More Fun, IMO, though I can find many favorites sprinkled throughout the '80s-early '90s. I actually like Blondes and "...Sexy". But, I guess I would agree that that is the shark jumping moment.

I'd say the second American Songbook. The first was a legitimately good idea, the sequel was pure shark jumping.

It was a gradual decline, punctuated by some great, “maybe he’s back” moments.

I agree. Smiler retained some of the style and players as the first four solo albums, but the magic was gone. After that, he just went further and further down the commercial rabbit-hole.

The 1980's were especially brutal to Rod's legacy. Lots of mediocre to bad albums that tarnished his reputation as a top-rank artist. As far as a specific JTS moment, I would offer up the horrible Body Wishes album of 1982 and proceed cautiously from there on.

Yeah, AC had a good slow side,2, and OK fast side,1, but it was definitely a different production. I think production changes, song choices, and the loss of Ronnie Lane from The Faces plus the Woody-Martin Quittenton-Mickey Waller triangle disintegration ran Rod right off the tracks not to mention his wifestyle-lifestyle and tart fashion choices. Fame and money will go to your head son.
