I've often wondered if Springsteen singing I got a sixty-nine Chevy with a 396 Fuelie heads and a Hurst on the floor dates Racing in the Street, but not sure.

"Strangers passing in the street, by chance to separate glances meet, and I am you and what I see is me"

People avoid checking their mail in fear of passing a glance to their neighbor.. And for the glances to meet would assume neither was staring at their cell phones.

"Grandpa, what's a conversation?" will be one of the most commonly asked questions in 5 years.

I'm not sure anyone ever spoke like that. It was artistic license...

Since the song mentions Valium and "the airwaves" along with "Ronnie" presumably meaning Reagan, I think it's safe to say they meant 1980s and 1990s...

No, and if you want to argue against the concept of songs sounding dated, that's fair enough.

But when a song specifically refers to something that later becomes outmoded, by definition it's "dated".

    It's not an insult...

It's evolved into a negative word. Taken literally, it's fine, but more often than not, it's a term not used kindly.

I agree - but really only when aimed at the sound. It's meant as a criticism usually.

I still say that in the context of this thread, it's not a negative. I don't think people here are bashing songs that referred to phone booths or whatever - they're just pointing out songs with lyrics that wouldn't work today! :)

I will admit I cringe when I hear lyrics that are actually too specific to present day - for instance the use of contemporary slang:

    We bitch and we fight
    Diss each other on sight

from Pink Floyd's "Louder than Words"

You know "dis" has been a popular term for like 35 years, right? :)

"Daddy" does have a history of being used romantically, I think less and less over the years.

What about the Ozzy Osbourne song "Mama, I'm Coming Home"? Was that a not-so-weird way to refer to the wife in the UK then? I don't think it's ever been a popular usage in the USA outside of black culture.

No, I did not know it was that old. I certainly never heard it during the 80's. I would have guessed it became popular in the late 90's. I'm apparently out of touch.
