Gap Band - "Beep-A-Freak" - "Call me on my beeper"

Isaac Hayes - his 1986 album U-Turn has a song named "Ike's Rap VIII." I can't find the exact lyrics online, but I remember at one point he said "They took the VCR. I can't even watch the Beverly Hills Cop." Yes, I know many people still use VCRs - I even dug mine out recently to watch some old tapes - but clearly they have lost their appeal over time.

Pink Floyd. I got thirteen channels of **** on the tv to choose from.

It's been a long time since there were only 13 channels of ****.

Years later, Springsteen complained that his satellite dish only got 57 Channels and Nothing On.

This was mentioned, I think, for another reason on this forum recently.
Sir Mix a Lot - Beepers

    in a similar vein
Three 6 Mafia - 2-Way Freak, which thematically was already aging when it was new in 2001

If not dated, it's bull. Fuelie heads don't fit on a Chevy 396. He write great lyrics, even if they're wrong. Another example:
    "Your boot heels clickin' like
The barrel of a pistol spinnin' round"
    from Livin' In The Future.

Thank you! I was genuinely looking for an answer to this. A guy I do some work for is into drag racing, and I didn't want to sound stupid by mentioning the song if it wasn't accurate.

Funnily enough, I was amazed as we only had 4 channels of **** in Australia, when the wall was released in 1979

You live in Canada. American pop culture takes a good 20 years to reach you! ;)

Also Bruce has a line in --I forgot the name of the song--"Took my baby to a picture show ...." No one used that term when Bruce recorded that, It was dated when it was used as the title to the 1971 film, The Last Picture Show. Which was the point.

Also in the BitUSA out take "Car Wash", the protagonist drops his kids off at "St. Mary's" and then works at the eponymous car wash "for a dollar and a dime...." Sorry, no one sends their kid(s) to Catholic school on a hourly wage of $1.10. Not now, and not in 1983.

Finally , the brilliant "Brilliant Disguise" contains--to me at least--the cringe worthy "wee-wee hours." Even Sinatra used "wee-small hours."
Wee-wee sounds like something your dog does on the rug.

Bruce goes wee-wee in "State Trooper", too.

It's an homage to Chuck Berry:

Chuck Berry was from an older America. Besides, he could pull off singing "wee-wee.'
After all, this is the guy who pulled off "My Ding-a Ling."

The second line would mean something entirely different these days, as well..... :p

Sure. Point remains: Bruce used the term as a tip of the hat to Chuck.

Doesn't mean ya gotta like it, but I think it gives the term context...

It meant the same thing when Henley wrote it...

In "State Trooper", yeah. Not in "Brilliant Disguise." That's entirely on Bruce. In that song it's cringe-worthy.

Not sure why it's okay once but not again.

Well, it never bothered me. It never even occurred to me to feel bothered by it, even when I didn't know the context! :D

No, I didn't mean Henley foresaw the allegations related to Trump.

I got the feeling Rocker thought the term "golden showers" meant something different when Henley wrote the line, but it didn't.

My comment had nothing to do with the irony that now comes with the connection of "trumped up towers" and "golden showers" - it was just a statement that the last term's meaning was the same when Henley used it...

Now there's something like 6,798 channels and there's STILL nothing on. Although Matlock reruns are on about 536 of them....

"Trumped-up towers" is definitely a reference to , well, you know who. You -Know-Who was also ( so I'm told) referenced in about 100 hip-hop songs released from like 1986 to, well, 2016. Mostly positively.
But then so was John Gotti.....

In what way is that lyric dated?

Only in the sense that it probably wouldn't fly today----or at least it would be the subject of a twitter meltdown by the usual suspects, that would cause Capitol to censor it, force the Beatles to change the lyric or out right pull the release entirely.
    I'm not joking either.

I was in Chicago and we certainly didn't have 13 channels.
However, cable tv did exist and its explosion on the market was only a couple years away.
