Now we’ve had threads about classic first and second albums. This time I’m looking for cases where it took artists a third album to hit the nail on the head.

An obvious example would be Bruce Springsteen - Born To Run.

Even though I love Wild Life and Red Rose Speedway, I’m sure a lot of people would say it took the third Wings album, Band On The Run, to really hit the nail on the head. Again I enjoy all three!

The two previous albums are great too, but this is undoubtedly a modern masterpiece. [IMG]

Genesis' third album (Nursery Cryme) is notable for being the first to feature the classic five-man lineup of Gabriel, Banks, Rutherford, Hackett and Collins. They also begin to settle into a "sound."

A good modern example would be the National and their great third album Alligator.

Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers - Damn The Torpedoes.

The first two were strong but DTT is a masterpiece.

Guess we have to wait for the "Fifth Album's a Charm" before we get to mention John Mellencamp...

    “A Hard Day’s Night”
    The Beatles

Their first album composed entirety of songs written within the group; unlike their previous 2 records, there are no covers.

London Calling = the proverbial home run of a 3rd album, similar to Born To Run.

I’ll also toss in Alice Cooper’s ‘Love It To Death’ (or was Killer their 3rd album?)

While I personally consider Indiscreet the best Sparks album, Kimono My House is regarded as their finest by many, and it was their breakthrough in commercial terms.

This was indeed the only one I could think of in terms of a third album being a truly enormous leap from the second, or first. At least for me.

Actually, upon thinking, the most blatant one is probably Alice Cooper!

    Love It To Death (1971).

At least for many. And certainly commercially. Myself, I love the first two albums as well.
