What's your favorite 60's Peace-and-Love anthem?

Something in the Air by Thunderclap Newman. Hardly pacifist, but very hippie and laid back. The only UK No. 1 with Who involvement too.

 

It's a real shame there wasn't a song "Wool, Wool, Wool, Wool, Wool" by Love. I'd pay to hear that.

 

I know it's from 1971, but this entire album calls for peace and love.

The who hippie love thing was fake and ridiculous but at least it gave us some great music.

 

I thought "What's Going In" by Marvin Gaye was a more of an angry record. A bit like "Time has Come Today" by the Chambers Brothers. Which I'm starting to feel is becoming relevant again.

Just thought of another great peace/love song, "Stoned Love" from the Supremes, I think in 1970. Amazing how much the new lead singer at the time sounded just like Diana Ross

Not sure. I was going to post Peace Will Come by Melanie. When I noticed Get Together mentioned repeatedly, probably enough to win a poll if there were one, I decided to post the Three's a Crowd cover, which is vastly superior IMHO:



Starts 0:17, runs about four minutes. The next rack Coat of Colours is worth a listen too. An excellent one-two punch to kick off an LP.

"Get Together", also known as "Let's Get Together", is a song written in the mid-1960s by American singer-songwriter Chet Powers, also known as Dino Valenti.

The song is an appeal for peace and brotherhood, presenting the polarity of love versus fear, and the choice to be made between them. It is best remembered for the impassioned plea in the lines of its refrain, which is repeated several times in succession to bring the song to its conclusion.

 

I never miss an opportunity to sing the praises of The Youngbloods' "Get Together."

It would seem easy to view it as a cliché that has long worn out its welcome. But in fact, it's an absolutely beautiful arrangement in every regard: the chiming 12-string, the electric piano, Jesse Colin Young's plaintive vocal, and the amazing harmonies on the chorus. Absolutely perfect. No other version of this song compares.

The single edit prepared for AM radio is an abomination, and I feel sorry for anyone who doesn't know the entire original track in all its glory. One more thing I particularly love about it is the way the drums lead into the solo. There's just something so right about the pick-up notes and then the new drum pattern than comes in.

No matter how overplayed it may be, I absolutely never tire of listening to this track.
