Although "Get Together" is the clear standout track, the Youngbloods first album from 1967 is well worth hearing. I particularly enjoyed "The Other Side of this Life".

"Get Together" by the Youngbloods was one of those songs that had to be released twice in order to be a major hit. In 1967 it went to number 62 but in 1969 after being used in a radio advert it peaked at number 5.

I'd forgotten Dino Valenti (Chester Powers) wrote it. The idea that he sold the rights to the song to get bail money is rubbish according to his son Joli on this very forum. He had sold the rights years before.

The whole song, which topped the charts back in 1969, was Aquarius/Let the Sunshine In.

Pre-dating the Summer of Love but my favorite

 

When I found out years ago that Chet Powers was actually Dino Valenti I was quite surprised. Before his Quicksilver days. Wouldn't have associated that kind of song with his personality. Great song but overplayed and grabbed too often for commercials which took some of the edge off. Years ago I saw a performance by Eric Bogosian (standup satirist/actor) in NYC. He goofed on the song for 10 minutes, sort of an anti Hippie rant. I wanted to kick his ***.

 

Best use ever of tape flanging.

 

That first album was great, wore it out. Jesse Colin Young went on to a reasonably successful solo career and "Banana" was an excellent and versatile guitarist.

 

Over here in the UK, the hit version of Everybody Get Together was performed by The Dave Clark Five (number 8 in March 1970)

 

I got a lot of likes for that post (though actually someone else named it here before I did) so apparently many people agree.

I saw Jesse Colin Young live 2 or 3 years ago, and he did a fantastic version of this song. His voice sounded great and the audience was enthralled.
