    Pretend these lyrics were Dylan’s.

When a rattle of rats had awoken
The sinews, the nerves and the veins.
    My piano was boldly outspoken
In attempts to repeat this refrain

    Now it’s brilliant!

Never liked it—may be one of the few Beatles songs I’ve never gotten all the way through more than once.

Yeah that’s good stuff, but you’re cherry picking. It ain’t all that quality and nothing that comes before or after that verse bears any relation to it.

I liked it more when I was younger. I think my disdain has more to do with it being overplayed than anything else.

My absolute least favorite Beatles song. Ever. Automatic skip every time, including vinyl, which I will get up and lift the tone arm for. I hate it that much.

    I like it.

It was one of several tracks that got airplay up here prior to the album being available in stores at Christmas 1968. It might even have been the first one I ever heard. Others: Birthday, Back in the USSR, maybe even While My Guitar Gently Weeps.

I like it. I've always liked it as well as just about every song on a very special album.

We'd have to ask John since it was he who first called those songs of Paul's "granny music".. IIRC, he specifically referenced "When I'm Sixty-Four" and "Obladi.." with that remark. At any rate, Lennon fans picked up the ball and ran with it. I think mostly it's Paul's 1920s-ish "toodle-oo" jazz style that draws the vague disdain, mostly from those who don't appreciate that Paul would introduce these numbers to stand alongside heavy Lennon stuff like "Yer Blues" and "I Want You (She's So Heavy)" on their albums, right up to the end. "Rocky Racoon" doesn't really fit the same stylistic template as things like "Honey Pie", "Maxwell's Silver Hammer", and "For No One", which draw heavily from the Ragtime, Two-Step influences. You're probably thinking about the piano interlude; the "doot'n doo-doo-doo, doot-doo" bit ..which actually owes more to ragtime's precursor - 19th century American western frontier-saloon style piano or early country honky-tonk.

Same here. Didn't actively hate it but (and the association with the show ' Life Goes On' when I was a kid didn't help) never really liked it that much. Then my wife and I took our daughter to her first concert last year to see Paul and similarly to you I have a new found appreciation of this song I've heard my entire life.

Don’t like it but don’t hate it. There are worse songs on the White Album and certainly worse songs in The Beatles’ catalog and most especially in Paul McCartney’s larger body of work.

I don’t *strongly* dislike it, but I can definitely do without it. There are only about 5 or 6 Beatles songs that I hate. I’d rank Ob-La-Di above them, but not by much.

I think that when looked at objectively, John Lennon was a very talented rock/pop songwriter and performer....but was a hypocrite, egotistical jerk and somewhat of an a-hole. Having said that, I am a huge fan of the Beatles and a fan of his solo work. At the same time, I can't abide with the way he treated his own son, Julian. All that BS about peace, love and imagine and you completely abandon and don't give a rip about your own son? You are not a real man if you behave that way, just an immature prick.
Yoko is a bitch, also, for how she treated Julian.

BTW - Ob-La-Di is great. When it came out, we all loved it, there was never any question of it. I love all of Paul's "granny" music.

Like many Beatles songs, I like it in the context of the album it's on. If it were to ever show up on a random playlist, I'd probably skip it.

Had to sing it in primary school. It's one of Macca's ditties for kids that don't hold up to repeated listening for....adults.

You have to separate the person from the music really. All four Beatles were guilty of despicable behavior at various points.
