Is there a more polarizing edit of a classic track for a 45 single
than than the Who's 1971 hit "Won't Get Fooled Again?" Some
people hate it, while others really hate it, and some just laugh
at it! Can something polarize in three ways? I guess it must
    be tripolar!

A glorious eight-and-a-half minutes chopped down to 3:37.

other edits of epic-length tracks. Some old, some new, and
some appearing for the first time! Perhaps you will share
yours with the rest of us wink emoji

Bowie's Young Americans single edit is one of the most atrocious things I've ever heard. Sounds like a five year old did it.

I think there's also a crappy edit of Bowie's "Fame."

  4. The Doors “Light My Fire’ is the first one that comes to mind. And then there’s the terrible edit in The Animals’ ‘House of the Rising Sun’.

How can you chop up an epic 8- minute track-- that needs to be heard in all it's glory to be appreciated--into about half it's length? It's pointless.
Maybe you can trim a few seconds off the long synth intro and get away with it, but not much more than that....

The Who’s US singles of Slip Kid and Love Reign O’er Me are pretty bad too.

I don't mind the Won't Get Fooled Again edit. To me it turns the song from the brilliant long album track into a great 45 that fits in well with The Who singles around it. Of course I much prefer the full version but I'm happy to have both.

My vote for worst is The Byrds - Chestnut Mare. A clunky edit chops out the best bit of the song! Young Americans is an awful one too. Ashes To Ashes and Fashion have excellent single edits, which I prefer.

The My Sharona single edit. That guitar solo needs to be heard in its entirety, 100% of the time.

Wow, I am taking "Station to Station" from over ten minutes to under four minutes.
I'm hoping you find my edits to be... judicious! I want it to be radio friendly!

This is my homemade edit, using Audacity, of David Bowie's
    "Station to Station."

My only rule was to max out at 3 minutes, 45 seconds, as
that seems to be a very radio-friendly length for the 70's.

And my guidelines were to keep the integrity of the song,
as much as possible, and to craft seamless edits.

    I hope you like it!

I bought the single when it was released. I didn't know it was an edit from a longer track and loved it immediately. When the album was released a couple of months later my reaction was basically 'holy crap' this is spectacular. And it still is. The flip side I Don't Even Know Myself is still one of my favorites, too. On the other hand I kept wondering when the Lifehouse movie was coming out.
Another epic track which was carved down to about 3 minutes was In-a-Gadda-Da-Vida and it actually worked as a single. A good thing, as AM radio was not likely to play the whole track
A strange one - King Crimson's In the Court of the Crimson King was cut in half and spread over two sides rather than editing it.

How about the American single version of Queen's "Liar". Some of the edits seem so random. Awful.

The single edit of Detroit Rock City leaves me asking 'Who thought this sounded good?' What's apt is the edit is a car wreck which is what the song is about.

I have to admit that I have a self made 'abridged' version of The Move's Cherry Blossom Clinic Revisited, because sometimes I want an immediate burst of pure energy without a 3 minute classical piece in the middle. :shh:

Damn! That is terrible. I didn't know a 45 edit of "Detroit Rock City"
existed. Was the original album track really too long for radio?

This edit could be the reason why the single wasn't a hit!

    Thank you for sharing this!

Is there a more obsolete and outdated form of entertainment than the single? I don't care for any whittled down track created solely to increase ad space for radio stations. Not to mention the censored content. Give me the album versions any day of the week and leave the singles, curiosities of a bygone era, to the dustbins of history.

Ahhhh.......most edits I've heard are nothing more than butcher jobs. I remember hearing Blue Oyster Cult's Don't Fear The Reaper with the guitar solo edited on the radio back in the late 80's.....what?

I wonder if the label approached Pete Townshend and said, we’ll need an edited version of this song for radio airplay, and also to issue a single.
    What would he have crafted?

The instructions for editing "Won't Get Fooled Again"
    appear to have been:

    1. Keep it around 3:30
    2. Keep the vocals
    3. Dump all the instrumental sections you need to

Actually the Top of the Pops video of the edit looks and sounds great. Too bad the one on YouTube has poor video quality.

That "Won't Get Fooled Again" edit is awkward and could be better-timed (why not let Roger complete the preceding line?), but I've definitely heard some single edits that improve a song. "Emotional Rescue" comes to mind.

A single edit of "Station to Station" is an interesting idea and makes good sense to me -- a fun way to experience the song differently. I'd personally skip the slower/half-time section and go right from the noise intro to the main riff.

I regularly used single edits when I would make mixtapes (or mix CDs, mix MP3s), and I've put together a few edits of songs for personal use.
