Yea, it can get expensive, though I just ordered your number 1 Lowtide Southern Mind in the UK green transparent press from ebay for about $21 delivered, not bad (15% off today with code PICKSOON). They have a nice package deal on that and the remix on bandcamp for around $28, that would be a great price for both, except it's another $18 for shipping. Probably just go digital on the remix unless it shows up for cheap. I think our best of the year lists are gonna have some overlap :)

I cannot believe how much I love the Tori Forsyth album. Probably top ten for the year for me. Instantly liked every song.

I saw Sons of Kemet tonight. It was great. Shabaka Hutchings said to tell everyone you know that they're touring the US so I'm telling everyone here. They have 9 more dates in the US.

These guys (Summoning) have invented the blueprint for atmospheric black metal. Their catalogue is dedicated to synth balladry of the tales of Middle Earth (laugh if you will but Tolkien stands in a temple alongside Beowulf author and James MacPherson albeit more fantastical than these Celtic literary greats). And, Summoning, by their output, have been one soundtrack among numerous to the Tolkien sagas. The 2018 album is called “With Doom We Come.”

I am bummed that I am not going to be able to see them, hopefully they come back soon. Another new one I stumbled upon this week features Tom Skinner (a Sons of Kemet drummer) as musical director for Toshio Matsuura Group's LOVEPLAYDANCE - 8 Scenes from The Floor. Released by Brownswood who also put out Shabaka and the Ancestors last year. This features some really nice beats with a live band. All tracks except one are covers but I would not have known this without doing some research, all sound very unique to this project. I would consider this a fusion album of sorts, it mixes lots of styles and instrumentation.

It’s a mixed album for me. I love most of it but I don’t like a few tracks, especially those with vocals.

UK's new school shoegaze band debut is out today. They play the heavier/punk up 'gaze wall of sound that I love. (Similar to stuff like Deafcult, Kindling...) Another one for my best of list.

Yep - the new Gazelle Twin record is utterly stunning. Been a fan since I saw her support John Foxx at a small venue in Brighton (The Haunt) in 2012.

None of her work is comfortable listening, but it's uniformly high quality. The 'unhuman' word you use is very apt. The reviews have been incredible, and they're right.

I checked the album out thanks to the op who mentioned it a few days ago. The Vocals are hard for me to get next to (surely by design) but I think it's cool music and very original. Thx for the rec I won't give up on that one (or double negative but hopes aren't super high)

Listening to Oh Sees Smote Reverser LP without interruption for the first time since release. What an incredible album end to end - up there with their best IMHO. Except with more organ! Wonder where Dwyer is going to go next.

I'm a month early with this one, but Aviary by Julia Holter will most likely be my album of 2018.

Yea, you may be right, that's a pretty incredible single, looking forward to the full album, she's always a surprise ...

    http://buzzbands.la/2018/09/27/video-julia-holter-i-shall-love-2/
Inspired by a line in a short story by Etel Adnan, “I found myself in an aviary full of shrieking birds,” Julia Holter describes her new album, “Aviary,” as “the cacophony of the mind in a melting world.” The notion is taken to an uplifting perspective, rather than being consumed by noise and fire. “Amidst all the internal and external babble we experience daily, it’s hard to find one’s foundation,” says Holter. “I think this album is reflecting that feeling of cacophony and how one responds to it as a person – how one behaves, how one looks for love, for solace. Maybe it’s a matter of listening to and gathering the seeming madness, of forming something out of it and envisioning a future.”

For its first single, Holter has shared “I Shall Love 2,” an incantation revolving around the words “I am in love / There is nothing else” that builds into the kind of dense, layered mosaic of little shreds that Holter assembles like she’s weaving a sonic tapestry using the tiniest needle and a mountain of string. The Dicky Bahto-directed video finds her falling repeatedly into an abyss. The kind of love she’s face-planting into is not necessarily the romantic kind but something much bigger and encompassing. “In a lot of the songs, when I mention love, it’s about a seeking for compassion and humility in a world where it feels like empathy is always being tested.”

Executive produced by Cole MGN and produced by Holter and Kenny Gilmore, “Aviary” features contributions from Corey Fogel (percussion), Devin Hoff (bass), Dina Maccabee (violin, viola, vocals), Sarah Belle Reid (trumpet), Andrew Tholl (violin), and Tashi Wada (synth, bagpipes). It comes out October 26 on Domino Recording Co.

I'm going crazy over Alejandro Escovedo's new album, The Crossing. A 60 minute concept album that shows him in fine form. His vocals, lyrics, the entire band. Highly recommend this one.

Outlaw For You, Teenage Luggage, Something Blue, Sonica USA...just incredible.

I definitely prefer instrumentals usually but I think I might like the vocal tracks more in this case.

This is gorgeous! I hadn't heard of this group before, but I knew I would love this one from the very first few seconds I played it. Everything you want in a shoegaze album. Just the right record to fall asleep to as the temperature outside falls.
