He'd probably never heard of them. Someone in wardrobe probably picked it for him.

Maybe he thought it referred to the art school rather than the band?

She usually draws well in the Northeast........I've seen her in NYC and Philly with big crowds.

With the punk-rockers wearing PIL shirts and all in the video? I doubt it.

Chris DeVoe RIP Vickie Mapes Williams (aka Equipoise)

I don't know why she didn't draw. Good songwriter, solid performer.

Edit: Ah, I figured it out. I was thinking of Courtney Marie.

I've been not listening to the Cure since the mid-80s, and I was around their music a lot

Okay, I listened to the Roxy Music album I picked up this summer crate digging. It was Flesh + Blood. It was okay but kind of, I don't know the right word, "airy" or "lite". It kind of reminded me of some of those 80s bands with videos on MTV, Voices Carry, These Dreams etc. I guess they influences some of those groups maybe?

I think I've got a crate with a Cure album in it, face of a little kid on the cover maybe? I'll move it up in the cleaning, playing order and see what I think.

  11. That's hardly representative of the band. For that, you need to hear their first through their fifth albums. THAT'S when they were more groundbreaking. Listening to Flesh + Blood to make a judgment call on them would be like making a judgment call on David Bowie from "Tonight" on his entire career. Yes, they did influence those groups or at least the latter day 80's version of Roxy Music (Ok, we can include 1979 as part of that as well) did.

My future wife. At the time, she had more Kraftwerk albums than I.

Soundgarden should have definitely been there, especially this year IMO

  16. I know that "Flesh + Blood" was popular in the UK but it wasn't a huge seller in the U.S. at least not as big long term as "Avalon" (which was their only million seller in the U.S.).

  17. They are pretty cheap used at places like discogs, second spin, local stores, etc. if you don't find them there. Not as cheap as the CDs though.

"Avalon" must've sold steadily over time, as it wasn't a hit in the US at the time.

All four of the prior albums charted higher in the US but they didn't sell as much in the long run.

BTW, Roxy only ever had one top 30 hit in the US: "Love Is the Drug". Strangely, "Siren" - the album from which that song comes - didn't chart as high as "Country Life", "Flesh" and "Manifesto" - you'd think the moderate hit single would've moved albums!

Not enough T&A on the Avalon cover, I guess.

I remember hearing "Dance Away" and "More Than This" on the radio, but not nearly as often as "Love Is The Drug". That got a lot of radio play for only being a Top 30.

If cover art dictated Roxy sales, "Country Life" would be #1 by far! :)

Of course, that's gonna differ depending on where you live. You mighta had cooler radio stations where you were at the time! :)

Charts are inherently flawed as "proof" of success, but at least they offer some kind of objective data...

  23. Yes, they charted higher, peaked early but didn't have the staying power whereas "Avalon" sold steadily and continued to hang at the middle of the top 100 for years. The other albums just appeared and 'poof' were gone.

  24. What sold "Avalon" was more MTV (although radio helped particularly progressive radio or stuff not doing the typical top 40 stuff).

"Avalon" still sounds really good, too, and like 80s Sade, it's good music to play to get your lady in the mood! :D

I don't think earlier Roxy was quite so "sexy time" friendly...
