Maybe, not always. Most classically trained musicians I've met have terrible systems. I can never figure it out..

Steve do you have a favorite Beethoven piano sonata cycle? I've seen you comment/recommend piano music in other threads which is why I was curious.

My absolute favorites for complete cycles are Annie Fischer and Wilhelm Backhaus, the earlier mono cycle. Rudolf Serkin is up there with them as well, but he never recorded the complete cycle.

Annie Fischer's set is the best that I have heard that is still available.

Not to hijack this wonderful thread but my band did that once. We and our producer, Jacob Hansen, who is a legend in metal productions, had a real good and transparent mix of an album set up. We sent a preview to our management and recordcompany. They wrote back insisting the guitars be louder. So we sent the exact same mix back to them asking “better now?” Sure thing, they aproved the “new mix which was the old mix” right away, even saying to us that they were surprised we didn’t realise ourselves that the mix was better now that the guitars were louder :D

Why does Hitmaker by Burt Bacharach sound so bad?

    Steve,
The Rolling Stones Singles Collection, which do you prefer? The 1989 box set or the later SACD remaster?

    I'll take this one.

The short answer is you'll need both versions as they each have unique things and errors but if you had to pick one, I'd go with the SACD or its CD equivalent.

Thanks for the input but I was looking for our esteemed host's take on it. Sound quality, mastering etc.

So why do you have it? Blasting offending DAWs, Elvis-style?

When I first upgraded my system to mid-level back in college (Garrard Zero 92, Shure M91ED(?), Rectilinear 11a, Marantz 2220B) I first discovered how many albums had sibilance, and initially thought it was the equipment. I learned that the equipment could be a cause, but often it was inherent in the groove itself.

Thank you for providing the music community with this wonderful forum, Steve. My wife and I also enjoy your Twitter account, and greatly appreciate your sense of humor there too!

We know you love The Who - on another thread you mentioned a preference for the stereo "Quick One"/"Happy Jack" LP (I concur - the mono is a bit dark and sometimes messy in its mixes...).
Which version of "The Who Sell Out" do you prefer - mono or stereo?

I personally love them both but the UK Track mono blew me away when I first heard it. Some deep John bass on that record!

    Thanks!

I'm not a giant fan of THE WHO SELL OUT. I like some of the songs though. I like the stereo and mono equally. Good points and bad points for both, mix wise.

Many albums were sloppily cut back then but now most if not all of them can be tracked today by a good modern turntable. The Garrard duds of the 1970s couldn't track their way out of the Jungle Cruise ride at Disneyland..

I’m not disputing that, I was just stating the fact that they don’t show up on my phone.
