I'm sure that The Police didn't mind the label at least secretly, as it is a type of publicity they may have needed at the outset.

If "accomplished musicianship" is one of the criteria, then Andy Summers becomes a big part of this conversation. It's no wonder Fripp recorded a couple of albums with Summers!

I'll give you "biggest", but Blondie had already scored a huge hit with "Heart of Glass" before the Police came along (yes, it's a disco number but they were unequivocally a New Wave band) and Talking Heads had scored minor hits (enough to be "successful").

It's a type of publicity they were obviously aiming for when they dyed their hair blond and started playing sped-up reggae.

Actually, the term "New Wave" (as it applies to the Police, et al) was coined by label owner Seymour Stein.

Jethro Tull win Grammy Award for best Hard Rock / Metal perforrmance in 1989

"The Academy recognized hard rock music artists for the first time in 1989 with the category Best Hard Rock/Metal Performance Vocal or Instrumental, combining two of the most popular music genres of the 1980s. Metallica, who were expected to win the inaugural award for their album ... And Justice For All lost to Jethro Tull whose album Crest Of A Knave won".

I would bet London to a brick more people don't like their music than do, so not sure how my opinion is unusual. Yes, more people on this forum might like them than don't, but I'd suggest we as a forum aren't actually representative of, you know, the rest of the music loving world. Otherwise I'd dare say, they'd be bigger than The Beatles...and we all know that ain't true.

I figure 1 or 2 were accidentally wrong clicks and 4 0r 5 were blotto drunk, and 1 was Andy Summers just being a jokester.

Nowhere near prog-rock. They were a fantastic blend of punk, pop, ska, and reggae....with hints of jazz and new wave.

My daddy's boots don't fit me,
    cuz I'm bigger than him.

    Pure Prog!

  19. They were and they weren't. "Synchronicity I" and Synchronicity II" both sound awfully proggy to me. Summers' guitar in particular, on that last one. The rest of Synchronicity, not so much.

The last two Police albums certainly stretched out a bit stylistically, but they never even approached “prog”.
