Is There Any Way To Clean My Turntable Mat (Rubber Stock Mat)

I was wondering if there was any to clean the dust, dirt, and debris stuck in my Technics SL-1500 Stock Mat.

Should I use a toothpick? Is there a preferred method?

 

Soap and water.

 

Warm soap and water?

 

Washing machine?

 

I tried a number of mats to avoid lint on records. What I like (and now own) is a LEATHER mat for my Linn. It is placed on top of the lint-producing felt mat. works like a charm. (got it at amazon)

And a brush to get in the grooves.

 

The In the Groove record cleaning roller which I've been using on my records for a few years also works great on my mat. Even those who are leery of using it on records (which you needn't be) would benefit from using it on their mats.

 

Is there any type of soap I should use in particular. Can I use dishwasher soap?

 

Yeah, I would just use a little bit of Dawn and some warm water. Use a stiff brush to get the crud off (no need to scrub too hard), and then pat it dry on a soft, clean towel.

 

The YT user "Vinyl Room" has some tips on how to clean rubber mats using cleaners that are specifically designed for the material. Unfortunately it was buried in a review of an old Denon turntable, so you may want to find his channel and PM directly about it.

If I was going to do it with stuff around the house, I'd make sure the cleaner was very diluted and mild so as not to harm the material.

 

Use a mild dish soap, and never a dishwasher detergent.

Rinse with clean water and pat to dry.

Some original mats ooze oil out of them-those should be tossed and replaced with a leather or a cork and rubber combo mat.

 

They make these? I didn't know I will check that out.
