I prefer Houses to IV, but I can see how many would have considered it a small step back at the time. Black Dog, Rock and Roll and Stairway to Heaven are probably three of their four or five biggest classic rock staples, and most of the better songs on Houses were a little more out there and not as mainstream (although it being LZ, they still got played a ton).

No, houses of holy is a great record.

My disappointment is CODA. I LIKE IT, BUT SONGWRITING WENT DOWNHILL THERE

Um, Coda is a compilation of previously unreleased material spanning several years.

Up to and including HOH they really could do no wrong IMO. After that you can start picking faults. I think they peaked with 5.

    Its all over.
I like it, but the arrangement of songs is poor, i would have changed the song order

4 was coming out behind every door in dorm. Plus a lot smoke. Then I heard Houses coming out from behind all the doors. Plus a lot of smoke. Equal.

The last few minutes of The Ocean is better than most songs on IV.

I’ve been listening to LZ for 25 years and IV is my least listened to of theirs by far.

HOtH was a major step down, AFAIC.

By far the worst album of the first six (though The Rain Song is great)

Not a step down. It was even more ambitious than IV.

It is very modern sounding indeed.
IV sounds more classicist and a bit darker.
HOTH sounds like a veil has been lifted. Brighter and more in-your-face, which serves it’s nature.

I've just been listening to HOTH as I read through this thread..."oh, so good." LZ was clearly expanding their musical palette from album to album, not steps up or down, but outward. Where there is a sort of "sameness" to IV (a virtue in and of itself), there is an adventurous to the music of Houses. One thing to which I always pay attention is the running order. The wrong song order can absolutely kill an album. Not so with Houses-even the jokey songs have a purpose in their placement, almost like comic relief. D'yer Mak'er into NQ is brilliant pacing, point counterpoint and a study in contrasts.

I think Presence is the summit of their achievements with ITTOD being an interesting and curious look
of where to go next. A very focused barnstormer of an album which takes no prisoners. Not a popular opinion, but I’m entitled to mine. ;)
