While I have been an Audiogon member for many years and only made one purchase (maybe a decade ago) I'm a little confused on how one pays for an item on that website. I'm trying to purchase an amp from a long term highly rated seller. But he's asking me to do some odd things; first he wanted me to send payment using PayPal's Friends & Family method. I did not feel comfortable with that (we're talking over $4K) so asked to do a CC and now he wants me to send him a copy of my CC (front and back) plus a copy of my license. Is this typical? Doesn't the site allow you to make CC purchase like ebay without sharing all that info with the seller?

Oooh - I don't think I would do that (sending your credit card and license).

Agreed. I've since learned Audiogon leaves it up to the seller to arrange payment very much like we do here.

He's trying to avoid paying his due fees. That stinks of dishonesty and is illegal according to his agreement with Paypal. Avoid like the plague IMO.

^I see lot's of listings asking for an additional 3% over asking price when using PayPal.

If the seller isn't smart enough to build the additional 3% in their price they shouldn't be selling and speaks volumes.

I would ask the seller why he needs the information just to see what kind of explanation he offers.

Even with F&F the sender would be paying the fee. PayPal caught on to the loophole. Whenever I sell I always say Buyer pays all fees.

The seller indicated that because I had zero feedback on Audiogon, in his eyes, I was a high risk buyer. At one point he even referred to me as a potential scammer and then stated he was very suspicious of me since I refused to cooperate with his purchase stipulations. I was amazed as he had a long history of glowing reviews indicating what a delight he was to deal with. But no matter, I decided if I did have any issue with the amp when delivered I could only imagine what accusations would be tossed my way so moved on.

I've bought and sold many items on Audiogon and so far have not had a problem, but I've never had a situation like the one you describe.

I'm considering selling a bunch of stuff on Audiogon, but so many stories makes me nervous. I've never had an issue with Ebay or even Craigslist. On the forums, lots of folks request F&F and I will either just not do the sale as it is dishonest to me, or I will just add the fee. If the seller is really easy to deal with I will add the fee any way.

I would love to stick with SHMF and AK as I've been members of both, but high dollar stuff just doesn't get much action on the forums.

Sometimes paying my dealer 30 points to do consignment seems easier even if it's a big hit.

If you do friends and family then you won't have a recourse if the item is defective on arrival. If you do normally via paypal then you have full buyer protection.
