Listening - where do you stand?

We all have our "listening setup" - mine is in my finished basement, in stereo
(it is "substantial") and there is the "sweet spot", where you can get the
"full stereo" effect - But I like to stand closer to the right channel speaker
when really getting into listening to something. Maybe I just like the stuff that
is usually mixed to the right, I don't know. Also turning music up and listening
in another part of the house sometimes improves the sound, especially c.d.s.
How do you listen to music?

 

Always in the sweet spot for me when I'm listening to my main system. I can't wander more than an inch or two until the image loses it's front to back depth as well as it's soundstage definition.

 

I sit. I find the lower I get the better it sounds. Just me maybe although I have read that's there's some substance to this.

Funny you should ask this now because I was just thinking about this. In the last week or so, I have been sitting by my left speaker and subwoofer so that I could use an electrical outlet while I listened to music. I turned the volume down by about a third or a half, and to my surprise I have really enjoyed the sound I'm hearing. Just the left channel and sub and whatever I'm hearing from the right channel, which can't be too much. I know it sounds crazy, but at the lower volume and the bassier tone, it has had me rethinking my whole sweet spot and volume level philosophy for maximum enjoyment.

 

My favorite way is to sit in my chair with my back to my speaker cabinets, centered. Most of the time anyway. I get the best effect of channel separation best this way. I like when the vocalist sounds like he/she is directly behind me.
Otherwise I sit about 10 feet from my speakers, facing them, centered again.

I usually listen while moving about my gaff, sometimes making coffee (an obsession) in different ways in the kitchen; sometimes typing palpable nonsense to the SH Forum on my iBook at my dining table (which is really my desk, now); rarely at the stereo "sweet spot" on my couch. I'm really a candidate for omnidirectional speakers - I wish there were some affordable Shahinian Obelisk-type speakers.

 

Well, I like to sit down-in the sweet spot right between the two speakers. I hate listening in another room. The sound is all thrown off including the frequency response, due to the unbalanced defraction from hard surfaces, time delay, and all that other stuff.

 

Not fussy for casual listening, but sit in the "sweet spot" midway between L&R for critical listening. But that's basically for the best frequency and tonal balance. Unless I'm listening to Classical, I don't pay a lot of attention to "imaging and soundstage."

(Unless it's really bad, of course, like some old crappy reprocessed stereo with the voices on the L and the music on the R. That's hard to listen to no matter where I am in the room...)
