    1. Andrew W.K. | I Get Wet - fun party music that is otherwise a tortuous listen, a solid 2x4.

    2. Ricky Martin | Ricky Martin

    3. Red Hot Chili Peppers | Californication - one of the best releases of the nineties totally destroyed

Thanks for the warning on Hoelderlin. I only have the self titled 1975 album, I think on the WMMS label, and it sounds great to me. I guess I'll just hunt for vinyl copies of "Rare Birds" and "Clowns and Clouds" on Ebay.

I have a Japan pressing of this CD. It's like listening to the Byrds on old AM Radio in your car. However, I think I'd prefer to listen to this than anything mastered for that ridiculous LOUDness War.

This is the only cd I ever bought that I got rid of, and mighty quick at that. It sounded so horrible I thought at the time there must be something wrong with it. Let me rephrase that, I thought it was defective. It was in the bargain bin and I still paid too much for it.

Sheryl Crow greatest hits, or Tina turner greatest hits 2 cd collection. These are just compressed and loud as humanly possible.

My copy of this CD has distortion and cracks/pops throughout. I thought maybe it was just my particular copy of the CD?

Gin Blossoms "New Miserable Experience" 2CD Deluxe Edition. Erik Labson took an average-dynamic recording (with no mastering compression) and crunched the hell out of it. Now, it's even more bright, with severely less dynamic range. A great album, and great second disc bonus tracks, ruined by awful mastering.

Glad I never got the Deluxe Edition (came close once when I saw it used...)
I just had it on the other day and the original CD sounds fine. One of the best pop/rock albums of the 90's!

This is an infamously bad one, isn't it? The granddaddy of poor mastering?

I'd give that honor to "Yellow Submarine Songtrack."

"1," on the other hand, is one of the worst things I've ever heard. It sounds like it was mastered on a sheet of cardboard covered with ice.

    And hi, AKA!

I recommend you to try early west german polydor cds,you will be surprised,I guarantee you.No, it is not hi-end sound (unfortunately Jimi almost all was recorded originally so-so),but this sound is the best existed for this moment.Even better than vinyl.

I can not listen today Jimi cd with castrated highs (thanks NR) & killed scene.

Alos I hate last Eloy (german prog-space-rock-band) remasters from EMI. Highs is too strong, compression, all flowers of bad remastering.

With all of the lack of love for the "Californication" disc, what's the consensus of the sound of the 1991 "Blood Sugar Sex Magik" disc and 2003 "Red Hot Chili Peppers Greatest Hits" disc?

Two in a tie for 1st place in my library:

Third Eye Blind - Blue. Great music but the brickwalling caused me to attempt to order a Japanese mastering, or so I thought. I get a German mastered CD, which is no different than my US master.

Brahms Symphony No.3 - Leopold Stokowski conducting. Becol records. This is so no-noised that there is virtually no echo and so rolled off that it has no high end or low end. Too bad because Stokowski's reading with the Houston Symphony is one of my favorites. Thankfully, it was remastered and released on a completely different label: Everest, which is owned by Vanguard - I think. The original Bert Whyte engineering is fine and now well represented on CD.

Good question. BSSM sounds fine to me, not compressed at all (it's from 1991, which was supposedly a 'good year' for mastering). But, like john lennonist, I wonder how the GH sounds, especially the Californification tracks. Are these any better? Anyone?
