I don't buy CDs anymore (due to the 76 previous posts). But a few questions.

Has an Artist ever complained or apolozied for this junk? How can they stand having their music sound this way? Have they no control or responsibility? This is all a bad joke, right?

The original cd from '89 (or is it '90?)

    The original lp from '73

However, the 180g reissue lp is very, very good.

Real hard to top that one as the worst, but they keep on tryin'...

Not the worst, but still real damn rotten, brickwalled to the max: RCA Country Legends: Waylon Jennings :realmad:

they are marginally better. having said that the BSSM songs sound worse. under the bridge is especially bad, no room for the song to breath at all. i guess it would have been a bit weird if they left the masterings as they were on the albums. you'd have to get up and change the volume after every song.

The Power Station 2-disc reissue. Sounds as harsh as my morning clock radio.....at any volume.

Macca's Memory Almost Full sounds like undecoded dbx or an FM broadcast.

Why do people think this is a good sound?

I wasn't too crazy about that 1995 version of Marvin Gaye's Anthology. The mono tracks hurt my ears.

James Brown 1971-1975- A lot of the grit and intensity is missing from this. That fact is especially troubling because a CD like James Brown's Funky People Vol 3. is actually very good.

The Brothers Johnson- Millennium Collection-The whole thing is just ridiculously listless, there wasn't any joy in the work. This is so perfunctory--and this music deserves more.

Anything mastered by Vlado Meller. System of a down, particularly Hypnotize.
Metal remasters, all of them, particularly Iron Maiden.
Depeche Mode Playing the Angel is pretty bad--same engineer did Garbage Bleed Like Me, which is an ear-bleeder.
    Anthrax Greater of 2 Evils.
Napalm Death The Code is Red is horrendous. These metal engineers have lost all restraint and rational decision-making.

I have to mention Rockabye Baby--Metallica--a great CD, not terrible mastering, but--it says "the original goes up to 11, we go up to 2". Well, this CD is significantly louder than any CD pressing of Master of Puppets! Funny, as it's a lullaby CD.

I used to have 2 Uk imports of Queen and Queen II and they were earbleeders. Gave em away.

Didn't he do the Hank Williams 2-CD 40 Greatest Hits, which is liked on this board?

I usually don't bother to post in any "worst of" threads (sorry, not a fan) but I saw The Who mentioned and, for my money, The Who "Odds And Sods" 1998 remaster ties "The Ultimate Collection" in the worst remastering department (at least as far as The Who goes). Add to that disc two of the Live At Leeds Deluxe Edition.

No idea. Maybe it's the Rubin-Meller partnership.

You should hear the vinyl. You may change your mind! :)

Rush's Vapor Trails was the first time I actually encountered mastering so heinous that I still haven't gotten through the entire CD. And I like Rush. Why they left Bob Ludwig, I'll never understand.

Here's another one I didn't notice was mastered so horribly till I just pulled it out again: Elvis Costello's When I Was Cruel.

I noticed he did a lot of Metallica's recent b-sides, singles and live material. Too loud!

Great tunes, but too loud at anything but the lowest volume :shake:

Gotta to disagree with the last two.Who's Next (Deluxe Edition) sounds very good ,while Stadium Arcadium isn't all that bad(though SH's vinyl blows it away).:)

  25. Yeah, can't agree with Who's Next (Deluxe Edition) at all?
