Somewhere I have a legit 3-inch CD single by Living Colour with their uber-heavy live cover of Tracy Chapman's "Talkin' Bout a Revolution" on it as a bonus "previously unreleased" track.

    Now THAT'S heavy!! :bigeek:

And Hendrix also covered Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band (live) and Day Tripper (live on the BBC) mighty heavily. [IMG]

Speaking of Nazerath, their version of "Love Hurts" is quite a bit heavier than the Everly Brothers version, id'nit?

I'm surprised no one's mentioned Judas Priest's cover of Joan Baez's "Diamonds And Rust".

:righton: Not to mention their cover of "This Flight Tonight" which is just terrific. "Loud 'N Proud" was just a killer album!:righton:

Their version of "This Flight Tonight" is a wee bit more than Joni Mitchell could have lifted, and their take on My White Bicycle was a bit heavier than Ichabod Craine, I mean Steve Howe and Co.'s original.

i'd say side "A" of this release....

    http://www.discogs.com/release/151508

    is heavy.....

not heavy metal mind you, but heavy relative to my definition of heavy, which may vary from yours, no?

Well, "I Want You, She's So Heavy" was one of the two or three heaviest tracks the Beatles ever recorded, but Coroner's cover amps even that up. I remember Ricky Rackman used to spin that a lot on Headbangers Ball.

Terry Reid did "Bang, Bang (My Baby Shot Me Down)" in a manner I'm sure Sonny Bono never dreamed of.

The White Stripes did Burt Bacharach's "I Just Don't Know What To Do With Myself", and do "Conquest" a bit heavier than Patti Page did.

The band Me First and the Gimmie Gimmies have made a whole career out of doing "punk" covers of not-so-heavy songs, but I wouldn't exactly call their versions heavy either. More Blink 182 than Vanilla Fudge.

Yes, and it's much better than the version Korn stole from them with exactly the same arrangement as the Gun version of the track.

    Some more:

    Land Of Confusion - Disturbed
Wreck Of The Edmund Fitzgerald - Jag Panzer
    Fire and Rain - Badlands
    In Your Eyes - SR-71
    Jackie Blue - Smashing Pumpkins
    Pretty Woman - Van Halen
    Good Rockin' Tonight - Montrose
Have A Cigar & Baker Street - Foo Fighters
Take Me Home, Country Roads / Route 66 / 19th Nervous Breakdown - Jason & The Scorchers
Queens Of The Stone Age - Never Say Never (Romeo Void)
    Scarborough Fair - Queensryche
Ride Like The Wind - Saxon
    Shining Star - Stryper

    Black Sabbath's "Blue Suede Shoes"
    Motorhead's "Louie Louie"
    Husker Du's "Eight Miles High"
Sonic Youth's "Within You Without You"
The Sex Pistols' "I'm Not Your Steppin' Stone"
    The Ramones' "California Sun"
The Residents' "Third Reich And Roll" album, particularly "Satisfaction"
    XTC's "All Along The Watchtower"
The Clash's "I Fought The Law"
    Deep Purple's "Kentucky Woman"
The Who's "In The Hall Of The Mountain King"
The Nice's "America" (the Bernstein piece)

ELP would probably qualify with a number of their interpretations of classical pieces, but I can't stand them so I can't provide specifics.

"Whiskey In The Jar" (folk tune) -- Thin Lizzy and Metallica

While we're on that subject, some of the heavier practitioners of folk rock have provided rocked-up versions of traditional tunes -- among the Brits I'm thinking of Fairport Convention, Steeleye Span, Horslips, The Oyster Band, The Men They Couldn't hang, and The Pogues in particular. Back in North America -- Dropkick Murphys, Flogging Molly, Ashley MacIsaac, the list goes on...
