After the premiere, director Kubrick removed about nineteen minutes worth of scenes from 2001. Supposedly he destroyed the outtakes from his films.

Kind of off topic, but some movies that are shown on TV that are edited for time, or content, sometimes show scenes that were edited out of the theatrical version. Case in point Gailard Sartain's scene in "The Jerk". I've edited a few of these movies together, TV and Theatrical print, to make sort of a "deluxe" edition of sorts.

Lethal Weapon "Directors Cut" holds the scene that has Mel (Riggs) take out a sniper at a school. It's AWESOME!

Supposedly, an early cut of AN AMERICAN WEREWOLF IN LONDON had a graphic scene depicting the death of the three older homeless men. I read about it in Fangoria, around the time the movie came out, so my memory could be dodgy on it. I think test screenings had people so taken aback by the scene that they wouldn't shut up for the next few minutes of the movie, and Landis removed it. I don't know if this has ever been released.

"Help!". The scene with Frankie Howerd and Wendy Richard as well as some other excised scenes have likely been destroyed. Ditto for the scene with Frank Thornton from "A Hard Day's Night".

The song "Dr. Hackenbush" from "A Day At The Races". Doubtful this scene still exists.

The mess that was made of the scene in "Horsefeathers" with the Marx Bros., Thelma Todd, David Landau and Florine McKinney (who was cut out completely). The editing was allegedly done for TV by MCA. A complete print with the original unbutchered scene doesn't appear to exist.

"Midnight Run" - the under-the-truck sequence as described in Charles Grodin's book.

"Casino" - DeNiro, alone, in his office overlooking his casino watching the money machine he is in charge of.

"Annie Hall" - The murder mystery scenes, Danny Aiello's scenes, the basement elevator scene... a lot from that film.

"Blazing Saddles" - several additional scenes where they tried to kill Alex Karras' character "Mungo"; used in the TV print to fill out the running time of the movie but never seen on any home video print I've ever seen

  10. Star Wars, the scenes in Anchorhead where Luke is hanging out with his friends, including "Camie" played by Koo Stark.

The original opening to "Sunset Blvd." in which William Holden's character, Joe Gillis, is in the LA mourge talking with the other corpses about his death. It was cut (after a disasterous preview of the film) by director Billy Wilder. Supposedly, the footage still exists.

Orson Welles' follow-up to Citizen Kane, The Magnificent Ambersons

Wikipedia summarizes the missing footage pretty well:
In the early 1960s, 20 years after the original film was shot, Welles attempted to gather the original cast and re-shoot the missing scenes, but that never happened.

Probably the most legendary original cut of a movie -- shown only to preview audiences with all the extra footage eventually being destroyed -- is The Magnificent Ambersons. The tale is quite involved and fascinating, particularly how Robert Wise and RKO were involved in the editing process.

Story has it that a rough cut of the original was sent to Brazil, where Welles was working at the time, but it has never surfaced.

EDIT: Looks like Bill beat me to the punch by a few minutes...lol!

Well, if you want to be technical about it, they have been seen - and I've seen them!

I don't think anyone's seen the Wampa subplot from 'Empire Strikes Back' or the sandstorm scene from 'Return of the Jedi' though.

I'll probably never get to see any scenes removed from the Monkees' film 'Head' (because they're likely destroyed).

There are about three or four scenes they cut from 'The Goonies' that weren't included on the DVD.

The whole "Fort Detmerring" sequence from 'Ghostbusters' has never been shown.

The director doesn't want people to see the deleted trial sequences from 'American Beauty.'

There was a whole subplot in 'Death Becomes Her' featuring Tracey Ullman that has never been seen.

The last 15 minutes or so of 'Kids in the Hall: Brain Candy' was completely different originally - technically this has been seen, because it leaked out as a bootleg.

The original ending to 'Little Shop of Horrors' (musical version) came out on DVD briefly, but a large chunk of the song "The Meek Shall Inherit" has never been seen.

There was a bit of a scene in the trailer for 'Ferris Bueller's Day Off' where Ferris was being interviewed on the radio about going into space on the shuttle, but the scene was scapped after the Challenger tragedy. The trailer hasn't really been seen much since then, either...

Nobody has seen any of the footage shot for 'Back to the Future' before Michael J. Fox replaced Eric Stoltz.

I love this stuff, I'm sure I could come up with more...

Do you know what was different about it? I couldn't find anything on the web.

  18. Let me guess, you saw it on a CD-ROM about 10 years ago? That's where I saw it. However, there has been no "movie" release of that footage, and only a limited amount of that footage was on the CD-ROM, not the entirety of the scenes.

Also, if you want to get technical about it, a tiny bit of the Wampa subplot footage exists, and I've seen that too. The bit that exists, although trivial, is a small scene where C3PO removes a "do not enter"-type sign from the room where the rebels had locked some of the Wampas in. Later--and I have not seen this scene--some storm troopers enter that door and get attacked by the Wampas. The small scene where C3PO removes the sign was included on an early trailer for Empire Strikes Back, and is available on a Japanese Laserdisk.

Oh yeah, some of the subplot did make it into the movie, as well. There is a small scene where some chunks of ice fall from a ceiling onto R2D2. The ice was originally supposed to be from Wampas busting into the corridor. Instead, as the movie was released, there is no explanation for the falling ice.

I have seen stills from the "sandstorm" scene, too, but never any motion pictures.

Surprisingly, there's a small bit about it on Wikipedia:

The whole "activist" bit with Dave Foley is the majority of the extra stuff. His group, if I remember right, was made up mostly of fast food workers and they used french fry baskets as weapons. Unless I'm getting confused with the final film, Cooper also attempted to reveal all to the world via the Nina Bedford show.

The workprint also features a funny scene from the Roritor party with Janeane Garofalo as a woman who finds scientists sexy.

You got me! :D Though I didn't see the stuff on the CD-ROM, it was taken from that CD-ROM and re-incorporated into an "alternate" version of the movie. I thought I had seen complete versions of the scenes, though.

Still, the fact that the footage was released in some form is pretty cool!

An obvious example would be the Jitterbug from the Wizard of Oz. Imagine being one of the members of the "test audience" that got to see the movie with this scene, only to be cut for the theatrical release and never to be seen again.

Another forum I frequent, the Home Theater Forum, has some long-existing discussions about the "roadshow" version of 'It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World' that they would like to see restored. Some of the footage ended up in an extended version of the film released on laserdisc, but these were not "official" scenes from the roadshow version and in some cases were just trims.

  24. I thought I was the only person on earth who had seen that stuff! ;)

Maybe the scenes were, in fact, complete, but I had thought there were just bits and pieces.

The CD-ROM also contained some other neat stuff. There was a cool set of alternate scenes from the cantina where a woman was hanging with Han, and where Han shot Gredo first (done differently than the version in the "special edition"). The scenes with Biggs and Luke on Tatooine were included. Also, the scene with Jabba the Hut that made it into the "special edition" is present--although Jabba is human!

King Kong (1933) "the spider pit"

Was seen by one audience, then removed and (apparently) destroyed by the director.
